new girls / breeds ?

Recommended Posts

Finally aquired our 3 girls tuesday lunchtime, they seem to have settled in and are getting on really well as far as i can tell,

there all hybrids and described as a Cochin (all black with a hint of irredescant blue in the feathers) a Maran (speckledy grey/black) and a Rhode Island Red (ginger)

can anyone confirm or give me the commom name for these hybrids ?

originally was going to go to Outgate Poultry but as i was only getting 3 he didnt want to sell me 3 diff breeds, he explained and i would have gone there and got 3 Rangers, but luckily The chap at Pets r Wright rang and said hed just received some more hens ( he only stocks about 6 at a time in his store,

The great thing is, his supplier puts incubators in local schools and teaches the kids about chickens, some time after theve hatched he collects the chicks and rears the hens up to sell on, so all 3 have been reared together, as i said above they are getting on fine, free ranged them for an hour on the 1st day, ushered the Cochin & Maran back into the run no problem, had to leave the Rhode Island for whilst as he stayed under the hedging , eventually coaxed her out and caught her fairly easily,

one softie in the eglu next day, although it was on the perches instead of the nest, and then found an egg under the hedge from the 1st day free ranging,

dissapointingly no eggs this morning though.

i will be free ranging them a lot longer when i have organised some temporrary mesh fencing for my planted areas,

i dont suppose i will be posting on a great deal (bit of a lurker to be honest) but its a great place for finding out info and i appreciate any help you guys have allready given me and also in the future,

thanks, Andy.

If they are a Cochin, Maran and Rhode Island Red they are pure breeds not hybrids. Very nice ones too. So they are called what you've called them.

It's quite normal to get softies at the begiining but they'll soon settle into laying.

i'm pretty sure they are hybrids of those breeds, he said they where hybrids and i'm pretty sure id have paid a lot more if they where pure breeds, the Rhode Island is a lot lighter colour than the one in my book but the pics of the Cochin and Maran are of the male.

wish i new how to post pics, im gonna give him a ring and see if he can find out from the breeder .

There are hybrids that are part Maran or RIR, but I do not know of any hybrids that use Cochins in the mix. These will all end up as quite big hens, esp. the cochin. I wonder if he just means they are crosses? i.e. pure breed hens of different varieties that were mixed with a cockeral of a different breed.

Thanks Tom, I treid and failed to sort the photos out

I agree about the Cochin, less fluffy than a pure one and no fluffy feet, ts very pretty

The other two look like a speckeldy and a Warren to me

Lovely girls :D

ps, whats a topknot ? not heard or read anything about them ?

They are a bit, Tom  . Could you resize them? Thanks :) .

The "topknot" is a collection of little fluffy feathers on top of the chicken's head.

sorry, I just edited her IMG code. Ill delete my post as she has re-posted them

Sorry

Tom
