Eglu Chick Kit - use from 10 days old?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

We're just embarking upon hatching and our first dozen eggs are in the Incubator. I noticed that it's now possible to buy a chick kit for the Eglu, which sounds interesting. Reading the bumpf about it, it says that"They will be able to enjoy the eglu as soon as they are old enough to hop inside (10 days old). "

I was under the impression they'd still be under a heat lamp at that age, so how would that work please?

Thanks for your help

Depends on how you're hatching them really.

If you're using a broody, then they can hatch and brood in there (I use my rablu) provided you put a non-slip flooring in the housing and a step outside the door.

If you use an incubator, then you'd obviously need to keep them under heat, and the age that you can pop then in the eglu would be governed by the weather.

Bit of a misleading thing for them to say really

Thanks for that Clare, at least I know I'm on the right track and that my question wasn't so daft after all.

I think I might get a kit anyway, that way if the weather is OK when they are 4 weeks-ish old they can go out in the Eglu and run during the day.

Assuming they hatch, of course.

Thanks again

Hazel

Not daft at all - the blurb wasn't helpful.

Don't forget that you're looking at 3 weeks from setting to hatching, then another 4 weeks until they go out... that's nearly 2 months, so we'd be in September and it might be colder.... :?

I've hatched late summer before, but they had a mummy to keep them warm. You may want a snugglesafe in there at night.

I was assuming they'd be under the heatlamp at night still until they were about 6 weeks old; but I think you're right about a Snugglesafe, even when they are off heat it might be a good idea.

Thanks for the tip Clare.
