chickencam
My DS desperately wants to buy a PS3 but mainly with the view to playing online against his friends. He has the money saved to buy the machine but we are a bit uncomfortable about the online side of things and would apreciate advice from anyone with experience. He is

Seagazer
My YS (11) does it on the Xbox with his friends from school. At first I thought he was going mad until I realised he was shouting at Elliot!

Redwing
advice from my hubby who is an avid on line gamer is obviously speak to your son about not giving out any details etc.. There are two ways to on line game one is using headphones so you can hear everyone, hubby says there is a fair bit of bad language and some nasty racist comments and the other way is to on line game not using headphones so you are not exposed to that You build up a circle of buddies and its best to stick with them, you can also block the less savoury people Obviously people are more competetive at the latest must have game and if its a shooting/war/fighting one it will attract a few idiots Hubby also says that Xbox 360 has a better on line gaming world as you have to pay for it so people tend to be more focused and a little more polite whereas PS3 is free and open to everyone so you get more shouters and weirdos on there Hubby says that the good far outweighs the bad and his experiences are largely positive these days but it did take him a while to get to grips with it all

Cooks
both mine have ps3's and have no problems with them at all, 1 has a headset 1 doesn't, but they prefer to play without the headset anyway... I have heard many problems with the xbox which is why we went ps3 so I guess everyones different We spoke to our children about the people playing are 'cyber people' (not all are your friends) they understand the dangers involved are just the same as chatrooms etc.. they never give out their personal details or 'chat', they just play. IF they want to chat to their real friends they use msn or the phone, or best of all they call around for them.. Good luck with whatever you decide.
