ross81
I have just been out to check up on mum and chicks i have 4 girls and 1 boy cream legbar 4 weeks today. The boy looks like his wings are touching the floor and his neck is drawn in and he looks rather sorry for himself. I have just got a new coop and run and put them in it 2 days ago dont know if this would be a factor. all the girls are fine and so is mum. should i leave him or bring him indoors. i have a brooder set up but have other chicks in that and dont really want to mix him with them or i have an empty incy if i could put him in that. any advice please
Egluntyne
I would separate him and keep him warm somehow. Can you borrow another brooder? Droopy wings and a sick appearance in a chick that age could suggest coccidiosis I'm afraid. I'd seek veterinary help tomorrow.
ross81
Thanks egluntine i have brought him inside and he is in a cardboard box with some food and water. is there anything else i can do?
Lewis
Has he got a heat lamp? Just try and keep him hydrated and warm. Have you got any apple cider vinegar for him?
ross81
Hi Lewis have been giving the chicks acv and battles in thier water will put some in for him. i dont have a spare heat lamp unfortunatly. i have a desk lamp that i can use would this do for tonight? Redwing
Yes desk lamp is ok, use a thermometer or judge by the chicks reaction as to how high it needs to be Did you put the coop on clean ground? if the ground has been used for chickens recently the adult poo can affect the chicks causing Coccidiosis
ross81
i put the new coop on a fresh piece of grass and all the others are fine im going to the vets in the morning so hopefully they can help and let me know what the problem is. smanners
I think Stalosan disinfectant powder is effective against coccidosis. I scatter some on the run floor and on the lawn now and again for this purpose. I bought some chick crumbs with AC ( coccidiostat) in it because I knew that my chicks had not been vaccinated against it.Don't think you can use it for the ones that have been vaccinated though. Hope you litttle man pulls through

Chook n Boo Mum
Ross, Marriages chick crumb has the medication added, go on their website & put in your postcode to find their nearest supplier to you. I hope the little chap makes it without too much intervention. I was weighing up the medicated/non-medicated crumbs at the weekend & ended up with a small bag of Smallholder ORganic (non-med) as SPR didn't have a small Marriages & I didn't have room in the car for a big 'un, I think I'll be going back though!! Good luck, Sha x
Redwing
Ebay do small bags, Farmgate do medicated chick crumb too and is available in lots of places http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1Kg-CHICK-CRUMB-POULTRY-FARMGATE-BEST-PRICE-ON-EBAY_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1686Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem35a2540c0bQQitemZ230356683787QQptZUKQ5fPetQ5fSuppliesQ5fPoultryQQsalenotsupported In the case of Coccidiosis its probably too late to rely on the crumb now though but its worth knowing fir next time, My youngsters will only have medicated crumb for a few weeks then I will move on to chick mini pellets so I was lucky enough to get just a few scoops of Farmgate locally Baycox from your vet may be the best bet IF it does turn out to be Cocci Blood in the droppings is the main warning sign
ross81
Hi tasha thanks for this i tried Marriages but they dont seem to have a stockist near me. So will try ebay. Going to vet at 9.40 so hopefully they can help. Also am i best to give medication to all my chickens? i found this http://www.chicken-house.co.uk/acatalog/Coxoid_112_ml.html last night should i order some to be on the safe side? Redwing
By the time the Coxoid arrives it would be too late if it is Cocci so your vet is the best bet but I have a bottle to hand if I ever need it so its useful to keep just in case The medication goes in the water and yes all the chicks (and broody) must have it
Chook n Boo Mum
Sounds like it would it be worth me ordering a bottle too then Tasha? I haven't read this info yet, do you use this in the water along with medicated food, or on it's own with unmedicated food? (I'll go & read the blurb too ) I was going to ask if I had to go the medicated food route...it would appear I do! I'll pop back to SPR & grab a small pack of medicated stuff to get started with...I am optimistic about the hatch, but don't want to be lumbered with a huge sack if one 1 or 2 hatch!!! Sha x edited to say - read it! Only needed if the little darlings are in trouble with cocci Better get some to add to my "just in case" "Ooops, word censored!"nal!!! x
ross81
well just back form the vet she said she wasn't sure what was up with him but no signs of coccidiosis but she isn't very hopeful as his heart beat is very slow. She did give him 3 injections one long lasting antibiotic, one anti-inflamatory and a vitamin jab. I went and bought a tortoise heat lamp from pets at home on my way back and i have a siringe to keep him hydrated. Will treating the others with coxiod do any harm (just want to be safe)
Chook n Boo Mum
Just popped back to see if there was any news...can't offer advice on treating the others, someone will be around soon who has experience of such matters, my first "babies to be" are due on Thursday, but I will loiter to see the replies as always! for the little chap. ross81
Forgot to ask the vet said they can do a post mortem if he doesn't make it is this recommended as im now really worried about the others although they seem fine at the minute . He has went really down hill since the visit to the vet and doesn't look good
Chook n Boo Mum
Give them a ring, the receptionist/nurse should be able to ask the vet for you & let you know there & then, or get him/her to call you back after surgery. Might be quicker than waiting for the answer on here. Huge {{{hugs}}} to you and the little one, Sha x
Griffin
I lost some chicks a few months ago to Coccidiosis. Very runny poo, pasted vents and depression were the signs in mine. I lost a Dorking and two Orps to it. Coxoid probably saved the rest although some never showed any signs of being ill. Coxoid goes in the water every day for seven days. With my last lot of chicks I used medicated Farmgate crumb from day one. As much as I hate using chemicals on them, having gone through the heartbreak of losing some and nursing others I'd rather use the medicated crumb than risk losing any chicks. I'm sorry your boy is ill. It certainly wouldn't hurt to use Coxoid on the others just incase.
Redwing
Personally in the case of young chicks I trust science but I do know not everyone agrees with this! Once mine are a few weeks old they will (like the last lot) go on to mini pellets which are not medicated as the pellets are less wasteful and as I understand it the biggest risk of Cocci is in the early days Coxiod will not do the others any harm at all I have a bottle now as I had a hen with tar-like poo and tried everything to dry it up, the Coxiod solved it in the end Glad its not cocci with the little boy, maybe he is just weaker than the others poor little thing Fingers crossed x
