Mrs Frugal
The 5 pairs of shoes I got ready to give to Mum were either unworn or worn once too, Cathy . I'd been hanging on to them just in case.....but why . Well done with the footwear clear out but look on the bright side though as that leaves you room to add 12 more pairs . Couperwife
just realised that im not actually putting where im going to send these too. hmmm, if its old and broken its going in the bin. if its possible present, then its going to the school hamper appeal, can charity shops take electrical goods? - or would freecycle be better for these (they all work) other wise its going to a charity shop phew
Egluntyne
I don't think charity shops can take electrical goods.
Mrs Frugal
Oh dear, that leaves me stuck with the dehydrator, yogurt maker, bread slicer, citrus juicer and curling tongs! Aaargh!! I hoped I could bung them in a charity bag.
Lesley
Our Hospice Shop at the tip takes electricals - they have a resident electrician who tests everything......worth asking.... As I started this off in NB, I feel I ought to join in........ .....but am I the only person thinking "oooh! I could have that!" ??? - at every post I read..... I'll make a start after Lauren and Jake have gone on holiday next week and I'm not on Grandma duties - I did start them off on their toy cupboard last week but all they did was happily play with baby toys
Mrs Frugal
I've joined our Rutland Freecycle group this morning and offered the electrical items. Hopefully someone will want them as they are too good to put in the bin - they are all hardly used (which is why I need to get rid of them ). Lesley, if I'm getting rid of anything you want, let me know and I'll put it aside for when I next see you . We've had a charity bag through the door today but it's one of those charities which are fussy about what you can put in the bag . Clothing, curtains, paired shoes only. No bric-a-brac . I have LOADS of bric-a-brac .
bronze
just seen this thread brilliant idea# I started something similar including have to throw away (only rubbish not usable stuff) a carrier bags worth of stuff a day I'm trying to have a major clear out. Will start on the hundred things now
Couperwife
Lesley, if I'm getting rid of anything you want, let me know and I'll put it aside for when I next see you . same with me im going to the crafty weekend at omletina's, so i can bring stuff down and pass it on Ive already had 2 people pm me for stuff (dvd's and the like ) I would rather it went to someone I knew than into a skip cathy x
Sheilaz
.....but am I the only person thinking "oooh! I could have that!" ??? - at every post I read..... Lesley, I was just logging on to admit that, having read through this topic late last night! I'm craving Kate's teapot. Actually, 2 people mentioned teapots, makes it very hard for me to think of decluttering! However, I must thank you all for starting & continuing on this theme. I can declutter at work, but ignore 30 years worth of clutter at home. It's so daunting that it's safer not to face it and do extra hours to tidy the workplace. Last night, I wondered why on earth people would come & post about their 100 items here & it would just be a temptation, not inspiration to people who really need to do it. However, thank you a million times to everyone on this topic. Having slept on it, I do feel inspired and spurred into action! Remember, 30 years worth, but here goes; 1. A basketful of ancient small soaps which "we might use one day" but never do (as there are plenty more). Part bin/ part charity. 2. Aforementioned basket. Bin (grotty from mouldering soaps ) 3. Coca cola gift box & contents (strange, but true!). Charity (lovely box) and recycling (tin & bottle). 4. Ancient single quilt. Bin (disgustering, why was I keeping it in case of emergency ). 5. Bagful of videos (charity; our shop sends for recycling, but not many do.) Well, have to go out now, but will make my target 200, only 195 to go! Thanks again! Mrs Frugal
Sheila, if you want the teapot, let me know!! It's yours if you do . Like Cathy, I'd rather the stuff went to a good home than in landfill. Anything which I'd be too embarrassed to give to someone is already in the bin but the decent, useable stuff is in a corner awaiting a charity bag which accepts stuff rather than clothing and shoes . Couperwife
sheila, if you separate the items (instead of bag of videos - list each video separately) the list goes up a lot quicker. this is great for motivation, you can then progress to moving onto "types of thing" (a bag of videos) so, what was 10 items (10 separate videos) now becomes one (bag of videos) therefore more of a challenge I hope this makes sense - its what I am planning on doing, good luck though , its a great feeling, im just ending up with lots of binbags around the house - I will drop them into a charity shop and well done to all that are joining in - its a great idea knowing that people up and down the country and gathering as I type cathy x
bronze
this is bad Ive been reading your stuff going what?! Kate I want a dehydrator and .... I want a ..... not good
Mrs Frugal
The dehydrator is big and that's why I'm getting rid of it as it takes up so much room in my cupboard - I'm experimenting with drying things in the airing cupboard instead as that does the job for free . I did think of offering it here in the FTAGH section but it would have to be collection only as it's going to be expensive to post as it's so big. It's on the Rutland Freecycle group (or will be when the Freecycle moderators OK it anyway ) if anyone in the area is interested though. bronze
poo dh was in lincs a few days ago ahhh I'm clearing out cos we need the space I don't need temptation I have been saving stuff up for a carboot but no idea how we would do one logistically so now I have joined cheapcycle instead. I'll try each thing on there a couple o times and then on freecycle if it doesn't sell I won't list things til they've actually gone though or actually I will mark things off so I can't count them until they have gone 1) breadmaker (edited for the 3mill. typos) Edited July 30, 2009 by Guest
Mrs Frugal
That's how I'm thinking now too, Bron. If I don't use something or can find a cheaper, greener, preferably non-electrical way to do something, the item can go. Well done on getting started with your declutter .
