Normal egg and soft shell egg from one chicken in one day?

Recommended Posts

Is this okay? Should I be giving them more grit or just accept that as the one egg is okay the second soft-shell one is just one of those things? There have been a few instances where they've laid a normal egg and a soft-shell one - I'd been blaming the bantams for laying the soft-shell ones, not realising that they could lay twice in one day. They've only been laying for a couple of weeks, so is this just them settling down?

Thanks

Freya

big red was the same but that was partly weather related at one stage she'd layed more shofties and doubles than grade A eggs it took her nearly 3 months to get the hang of laying grade A single yolkers it wouldn't hurt to add cod liver oil to the feed a couple of times a week the vit D will help as for the grit as long as there's a pot the'll take it when they need it

We've just had the same today from Baked. Both she and Fried laid this morning and when they were out for their run this afternoon she seemed a bit under the weather. Just before she went back in to her pen, out popped a second egg with a soft shell! No wonder she seemed odd! She did try to eat it but I persuded her off it with some worms because I don't want her thinking it's OK to eat her own eggs! Both of them are settled into their laying routine now so I don't know what caused it but I have put some extra grit in today since she obviously didn't have enough for that second egg. Any advice welcome!
