TheHunter
Could you please let me know what you do if you are away for 7 days. Is it OK to buy an extra feeder and waterer (Glug & Grub) and fill both before you go and leave the door open (Cage sealed). It would be for 3 Chickens in a cube. We are new to the area and don't know anyone who would be able to pop in. Thanks.
Falkor
Have you looked at the chicken sitters list on here? There may be a forum member close by that could check on your ladies for you.
Old Speckled Hen
I've left mine overnight but there's no way I would leave them for 7 days. What if they gobbled up all their food in the first four? What if the water ran out? What would happen to all their eggs? I'd look around for a sitter. Can none of your relatives live in? Can you look in to your local vet and see if there is anybody on their books, perhaps one of the nurses or maybe somebody who feeds cats while their owners are away. Olly
2 days = fine 7 days = too risky - as well as running out of food/water, the eggs will build up; a chicken could become ill; a predator could work away at a weak spot on the run ... you need someone checking at least every other day in my view. Try the chicken-sitters list, see if there's a neighbour or a neighbour's child who would be willing to help, or ask at your local vets surgery for pet-sitters, who could come in and do it for a small fee. Let us know where you are, as there might be another forum member near you who could help with suggestions.
TheHunter
Thanks everyone, as you can tell from my number of posts that I am new to this. The holiday dilemma was one of the questions I needed answering before biting the bullet and getting my cube and chooks. The Chicken Sitter list is an ACE idea, I will be adding my name to the list for the Sleaford area as soon as i am up and running. Thanks again. Pedro1962
Could you bribe your neighbours with a weeks supply of home-laid eggs? Might be a nice way to break the ice. I am going away for a week next month and I am lucky in that my neighbours on both sides (having tasted the eggs) are very keen to look after my hens.
