lyd119
what exactly does it do and do the chickens need to be out the house for a certain time after the house has been treated?? Thanks, Lydia
Chook n Boo Mum
Jeyes disinfects whatever you put it on, but it's poisonous to chooks....that said you can use it as long as it is totally dry before the chooks go back in and they have no access to any puddles of jeyes water. Personally I don't use it, not prepared to take the risk as my chooks all like to "help" anytime there is water around & are into any puddles quicker than a duck!! I believe Poultry shield is a good disinfect/cleaner, I use hot water with teatree & ecover added as I have the and , not sure that would be so good with a wooden house. The Dogmother
Sha is right, Jeyes is poisonous to some animals, cats in particular as they can absorb it through their pads. Save it for your drains and use Poultry Shield, which is a good disinfectant and mite killer. Virkon and Barrier V1 are other good disinfectants, which are poultry-safe but aren't crawly killers. Jennyhenny
I was recommended by someone at Practical Poultry to put Jeyes Fluid in an old Miracle Grow dispenser that you attach to a hose to clean my rubber chippings. Has anyone ever used it in their run Jennyhenny
The Dogmother
As mentioned in the post above yours; it is toxic to most animals, so please don't try this.
jomaxsmith
There is a nasty sounding ailment affecting the hen's vent that is caused by using Jeyes fluid so I would definitely avoid it. I use a splash of Dettol for routine cleaning and Poultry Shield every so often but there is also some debate about the safety of using Dettol. The Dogmother
That's right, Dettol is out too - contains phenols - that are toxic to quite a few animals. Poultry Shield is a brilliant disinfectant as is Barrier V1, although the latter doesn't kill mites
Egluntyne
Anything that turns the water white is best avoided around pets of any sort.
