Seagazer
ES is having this done tomorrow, it is keyhole surgery and they use a camera to look inside the knee. He has had trouble with his knee on and off since he was 7 when it just gave way one day. The hospital said he had damaged his anterior cruciate ligament. He had physiotherapy then and osteopathy. The last 7 months or so it has gone again and he's had lots of pain in it. I think that this is probably because he is driving now and the constant action of changing gears is inflaming it. He's now getting pain in the other knee possibly because of favouring that over his bad knee. Has anybody had this done before? The consultant said that he would be able to walk on it straight away but that he can't drive for a week and has to have two weeks rest. They will obviously repair anything that needs to be done whilst he's under anaesthetic. I hate it when the kids have had to have operations, they've all had ops before but it doesn't stop me worrying I've got some arnica for him and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. quickcluck
Helloooooo He will be fine! I think you've been given good advice. It's important to walk on it straight away as in the long run he'll recover faster, also I suspect he'll be given a host of exercises to do which are also important. I'd suggest taking any pain relief as often as prescibed initially as the more comfortable he is the more he'll walk and do exercised and the faster the recovery.... Driving definately 5-7 days and then try an emergency stop, if he can't do it 'properly' then wait another day or so..... Fingers crossed for you

Egluntyne
OS needs it doing....his knees are always locking. YS's boss had it done last year and hasn't looked back. All the best to your son.
Seagazer
Phew thats good to know, thanks everyone. Think I've just gone into panicking mum syndrome! Its brilliant to know that it could be the end of his knee problems. Thanks again
girlsmum
Ive had this done twice now. Once for a torn cartiledge and once for a look. It is important to do the physio exercises they give you. They definately speed up recovery. They make you walk within hours of surgery and pottering round the house is ok for a week afterwards. Make sure your son sits with his leg raised when he can. I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery Girlsmum
Patricia W
I've had both done over the last 3 years. Vast improvement but frankly, in my case, it isn't lasting. It looks as though I'll have to have a partial joint replacement. Firstly in one knee joint. I keep putting it off as it's much more a major operation. Seagazer
Hello all, we're back home now. Op went fine, they repaired his cartlidge (sp?) and he is currently holed up in bed playing on his xbox thingy. He was hilarious when he first came back to his room and kept us very amused but once he had to start walking on it it was a different story. But he is now pleasantly drugged up and hopefully this op will sort out his knee for a good long while. Trouble is I think he will need to have the other one done at some point. Thanks for all the well wishes and I hope everyone elses knees get fixed at some point

Ms Marple
I wish him a speedy recovery!!! My ES has had this done 5x over 3 years both knees, starting at age 15. You have been given good advice already- make sure his does the exercises. My son is mainly fine now, although one knee gives him slight trouble from time to time. He has always been an intensely competitive sportsman, running, rugby, cricket, football and now rowing. He does work very hard in the gym on a regular basis to make sure that the muscles around his knees are as strong as possible.
Seagazer
Five times! Gosh I was worried about the fact he'll probably need the other one done at some point. He's just come down to get something to eat to take some tablets but seems to be hobbling a bit quicker
Guest
Yes hobbling is normal for a few days and suddenly it all gets better fast..def agree when he needs to do exercise muscle strength can really help joints...early days yet. Years ago it was lots of rest but nowadays its try to let it heal in the way it is used(rather than get stiff muscle waste etc) Am sure he wont look back..its good operation for cleaning out and checking it out visually! At least its warmer weather too for him to get out..well when the sun is shining...where is the sun by the way

He'll need a fair bit of physio as there is quite a marked difference in his thigh muscles, the doc was quite shocked. ES is fairly tall but very thin and hasn't quite built up his 'adult' muscles yet. He has had problems with his back in the past which the osteo said was due to loose ligaments and not big enough muscles.
Daphne
glad to hear it all went well Just wanted to say my OH had his done about 20 years ago and although he still gets the odd twinge it doesn't stop him doing anything except occasionally he feels it if he's cycling hard (thats what caused it in the first place). My late father had his done when he was in his mid 60s and never had a problem and my bro has also had both his done about 10-15 years ago after skiing accidents with no problems afterwards. I think the op is one of the marvels of modern medicine! All I can remember from OH's op was the waiting on hand and foot for 24 hours - from both me and his Mum. My bro told me that he used to wear a knapsack when at home and hobble about with food and drink in it because he couldn't manage the 2 sticks and carrying things. Seagazer
Oh I've been doing plenty of running around for him, just made him two egg mayo sandwiches . It was ok yesterday as his girlfriend was here and she did most of the running around! Finally managed to get him to do without the crutches and they've just phoned up with his physio appointment for Friday so its all good.
