rufusrooster Posted August 1, 2009 Share Posted August 1, 2009 as it now looks almost certain i'm going to have to take "Lisa" (gonna have to start calling it Les) back , and after reading all the threads on hereabout Cream Legbars, i am now quite keen on replacing him with a blue/green egg layer, does anyone know where i am likely to obtain one from in the Yorkshire area (or nearest) and what other breeds lay blue/gren eggs ? ps, i am still waiting for a 1st egg from Gene, someone did say there is a small chance she may lay blue/green eggs cos of the tuft of feathers on her head, but i dont hold out much hope, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I know its a long hike down the M1 from east Yorkshire - but if you can't get one closer to home I can assure you that lots of people on the forums have had very positive experiences from them. I have one from there and she lays a gorgeous pale blue egg nearly every day but she does seem to be a bit more skittish or nervous than the others I have. Here's what it says on their website: Merrydale Crested The crested, bred from a cream creasted legbar is still being developed as a commercial blue egg laying bird.programme, involving the use of traditional British bloodlines gives a varied coloured hybrid. A Breeding programme, involving theuse of traditional from cream or tan through to blue and grey, or mottled feathering, often with a lighter hue to the breast. A proportion are crested and comb size varies. A good sized bird, with 80% laying a blue/green, medium to large egg, the remainder lay a range of pastel shades. Lays approx 280 eggs in first year. Redwing Posted August 1, 2009 Share Posted August 1, 2009 Columbine and Skyline are 'brand' names for a blue/green egg laying hybrid (there is a 20% they may not lay blue or green though) I dont know for sure but I would say thats what the Merrydale Crested is Crested Cream Legbars and Araucanas are pure breeds that lay blue eggs (although some strains of Araucana are poor and the eggs are more green) Are you sure now that Lisa is a boy? As you are unsure what Gene is crossed with it could be that there is some blue/green egg laying blood in there as both the Araucana and Cream Legbar have crests/a fancy hairdo - you never know! Give them a call - many on here do use their delivery service and have found it cheaper than driving to collect them. TAJ Posted August 3, 2009 Share Posted August 3, 2009 I didn't pay £32, that must be the POL price, as they can be sexed at a day old and they only need heat until 5 weeks you can get them a lot cheaper younger - at 14 weeks mine was under £25 from Wernlas, even so carriage does look expensive for one chook. Mine was born in Jan and started laying 2 weeks ago and I have had 5-6 blue eggs a week from her and the Barnvelder (dark brown eggs) is laying just as well. Keep looking they are worth getting. Griffin Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 If green/blue eggs is really really important then I wouldn't buy a Skyline/Columbine/any other blue egg laying hybrid because around 20% of them do not lay blue or green eggs. I had to rehome my Columbine because she was very noisy. She laid creamy coloured eggs despite having green ears! Araucanas and Cream Legbars will definitely lay coloured eggs. Also are the cream legbars too skittish for a newbie ? My lot includes 3 of these bluebelle, sussex & cream legbar - all fine together. Violetta ® lays sky blue eggs (though the pic doesn't really do them justice) Gabriela (L) lays slightly green (sometimes camouflage-looking eggs) but I can't seem to find a pic of her eggs though I'm sure I have one somewhere. cordelia Posted August 13, 2009 Share Posted August 13, 2009 my cream legbar, a very pretty bird, sometimes crows....VERY loudly....well its almost a crow... she unfortunately lays white eggs (bad breeding..shame) and she took almost 6 months to lay....but she is lovely (if a bit flighty) and sang beautifully when she first came to us.... she would be fine with a newbie, just dont hope to pick her up...so a mixed flock would be better..... she is gorgeous though, and I'm please I have her... her sister lays blue/green eggs...(alas she's not ours) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
rufusrooster Posted August 13, 2009 Author Share Posted August 13, 2009 I ended up with a columbine from Storrs on Saturday, was really worried about the integration after the 1st couple of days, but after seperating them in the run with canes (as suggested in another thread) for the last 2 days its gone really well, today was the 1st day i was happy to leave all 3 together in the run, and hey presto, ist egg more green than blue but really pleased, im hoping they get bigger though, 43 gm and its next to one of poppy's at 63gm. to be fair, the picture does not give a very good idea of the actual colour, well not on my screen anyway.
