Am I right in thinking its greens that make the yolk a darker yellow/orange colour, weve had Poppy 4 weeks now and i'm sure her yolks where a lot yellower/oranger when we 1st got her ?

she freeranges from mid/late afternoon but there isnt much available to her in the way of greens, other than grass and the odd dandelion/weed but she's much more intrested in digging for grubs and worms anyway,

should i be giving them more greens as treats ? and if so whats best ?

Greens will make the yolks darker, but they're just as tasty without. You could try giving a bit of broccoli or spinach, mine love it but to be honest I only feed it when it's left over from what I eat, I don't buy it specially.

there tasty enough just wanted a darker yolk,

i know you have to boil up potatos/peelings but wahat about other veggies, do they all need boiling up ? ie spinach/broccoli

Apart from potatoes (which need to be cooked), my girls eat their veggies raw. I give them tops off beetroot that I grow, plus cabbage/broccolli leaves, cucumbers, the green discarded bits of leeks (not too much, or it may flavour the eggs?) and lots of fresh dandelion leaves and chickweed that I pick from the allotment.. If you live near a market, sometimes you can get hold of the outer leaves of cabbage/cauliflower for free. Just give them a good wash first.

:D
