Chook n Boo Mum

Post-Broody Buffie's looking better!

Recommended Posts

Her crop was the firmish golfball size first thing this morning, she'd had one peck at the chick crumb porridge and a couple of slurps of water plus the 3 or 4 syringes of slop, not sure though if that quantity of food would have made up that size of mass in her crop.

I picked up the only one of her sisters who will "happily" crouch for me and had a grope at her crop which felt totally different, really sloppy & loose.

I'm going out now with some more olive oil and slop to try & get it into her. I'll pop out later to get some apples to cook down to sauce for her tea........she has a more varied diet than me and isn't even enjoying it!!!!!

My DH came out this morning & was quite surprised that I was sitting in the eglu run with her on my lap "how on earth did you get in there  ?"....perhaps Omlet would be able to consider an increased head height should they develop a Mk3

I had a massage of her crop after lunch, and she settled into my hand as though she either enjoyed it or it made her feel better....I'd like to think!!

When I put her back on her own two feet, I started lucking kernels off a sweetcorn..she called the babies, gave them some and then proceeded to hoover the other pieces up  Small steps!!

.......how much do I love my feathered babies........lots because I went & bought a bag (a small one  ) of MAGGOTS :vom::vom::vom::vom: for them to munch on and enjoy.................and enjoy they certainly did!

Buffie called the babies who fell over themselves to get to her, she picked up a few of the wretched wrigglers & dropped them for the Bufflings who ran away and devoured them...then suddenly started to much them herself...I was almost in tears I was sooooo excited to see her snaffling hundreds of these revolting masses of protein (which may sort out any blockage she may have in her crop too  ) multitasking grubs - wonderful!!

The big chooks tried to get through the chicken wire despite the fact they'd had a serving before the Buffie-kins, bless them!!

Now for a dose of medicine for the little mama, and a few syringes of slop & we can all retire happy!

Sweetcorn and maggots! Sounds like a feast! (well if you are a chook!)

Great to hear that she is eating and hope those maggots give her a boost and as you say help with the crop thing :D

The things we do for these chooks! :D

(not sure my OH would agree to an Orp in bed with us though! Mind you if that was the case I would set up camp with her in the downstairs loo if need be! )

Hugs to Buffie, snuggles to the Buffkins and a BIG SUPPORTIVE hug and virtual G&T to Sha! You have had a stressful few days lady!

yes, from me too. I'm really pleased for you. I've just been listening to something serious on the radio that I need to tell OH about, but I was half thinking about Buffie. I have my own Buffy (actually a buff orp surprise surprise) and she also reminds me to think of you. Come on the Buffingtons :D

Hi Sha,

So sorry to hear you are having such a rough time with Buffie. I'm sure I read on here that Baytril can sometimes cause crop problems :(

I had a chick with a dodgy crop the other day and went with the maggots :vom: apple puree, bio yoghurt and twice daily massages etc. It worked after a few days and calm is restored now. :D

They are such a worry aren't they?

Hopefully it will all get better shortly and you'll be able to embrace the joys of chicken keeping again very soon.

Best wishes

Sophie

..I'm still planning to get more chickens as I'm convinced having 13 is the root of my problems :lol: I decided last night that an extra 4 would be a good number which would take me up to 17 in case all my babies are boys, then I wouldn't be left with 13 again...DH might agree to another 2 which wouldn't work at all as I'm pretty sure from all the posturing that I have at least 2 boys :anxious: ......no, 4 is definitely a good number  !! Just have to get that other eglu for intros..........!!!

Thank you all so much for your good wishes, it has really helped knowing all our "omlet aunties" are at the other and of the keyboard

Buffie definitely has a crop problem, it was very firm & golfball sized.......but the little minx shot out of the eglu, straight into the cage cup of chick crumb & called the babies with a beakful!! This I see as a huge step forward...her colour is almost normal again...she came out of the run (I can't face crawling back in there unless I really have to!!) to investigate a few maggots & was grabbed for her meds & breakfast etc...she stayed for the Baytril & as I leant over to pick up the syringe of olive oil for our massage session, she shot off my lap & disappeared back into the run...I could almost hear the :P as she went through the door  .

Once I'm suitably dressed & sorted I'll go out for another try......... :anxious:

AAAAAAAHHHHHH  !!!! We are no longer a family of 13 chooks....we have a newbie....a chicken of fate....and she's a pekin too...I'll start her own thread so you can all meet her with piccies tomorrow

Buffie had a nicely squidgable crop when she went to bed tonight and the vet has said to stop the baytril if she seems better, that will be one less syringe to get her to open her beak for in the morning  I'll carry on with the oil & slop if her crop isn't empty by then, but she seemed to have been eating more of her own accord today which is brilliant, she also hasn't fought against me opening her beak so much either....life is getting luckier with Buffie's improvements and Blossom's arrival....I am a happy bunny (whiterabbit)(hatch)(whiterabbit)

Great Sha! And well done Buffie for letting mum help! :D

COF!!!??? a pekin!!!! **scoots off to find this other thread**

I've only just managed to kick DD off the computer, so I'll get the pics uploaded & start the new thread

Buffie's still got a golfball in her chest but is eating and letting me massage it, so I'll grab her again later & have another session & hope we manage to clear it soon :anxious:

:shh: I don't want to tempt fate, but Buffie's crop felt much looser this evening, she had had a dose of oil and apple sauce this afternoon with a few slurps of weetabix to follow it up, and the same this evening with a last dose of Baytril...I am so hopeful that the apple sauce has done the trick, I'll give her another go with the oil and sauce in the morning if it's hard again obviously, but it would be do disappointing if it hasn't cleared given just how soggy it was at bedtime :vom:

Wasn't too bad early on, her crop although firm again was smaller, so I gave her oil, massage, apple sauce, massage & bit of chick crumb gruel..... but she doesn't seem to want to wake up properly now I'm going to tog up & go into the run to syringe some avipro water in as I don't think she's drunk much but I feel like I'm back to square one again. I'll give her some of the remaining Baytril too...I knew I was jumping the gun & jinxing things last night :(

I've been told now that the best way to clear the crop is to essentially massage it all back out the way it went in..........oh I so don't want to have to do that :vom: , but if that's for the best, I'll do it of course.........advice please
