What to use as edging to keep woodchip in the run?

Recommended Posts

Hi. An after some suggestions to keep the woodchips in the run. At the moment we have some plastic lawn edgeing (the type that comes rolled up), but it become brittle from the weather and breaking in places. Want something that will last a lot longer than a year, and doesnt cost the earth. Any suggesions?

Thanks

I tried shower curtain cut into strips, and put round the run tied on with cable ties - but wasn't too succcessful. It got very tatty very quickly - or that might just have been the way I attached it all on!! :D

I now have the lawn edging like you have. Have only just put it on and looks quite good - bit disapointed to hear it will diminish over time though...

Be interested to hear what other people suggest!

I noticed in the Omlet schop that they do a "chick" converter for the Eglu which includes an edging to go round the bottom of the run. I did contact them and suggest that they sell that separately as I think a lot of us have this problem. I don't know how long it would last though!

the people who ran our 'met the hens' course used gravel boards (pressure treated timber planks) which were placed round the outside of the run and fixed in place round the bars with some kind of u-shaped metal pieces bolted to the wood - it looked pretty effective and permanent, though gravel boards aren't particularly cheap.

We use plastic lawn edging, it's not very effective, I am thinking of using planks instead now that our cube is in its permanent position

i used this bamboo roll from b&q, thought it would be nicer looking than log roll, its ok but if you havent got it in level it breaks easy when your trying to marry up 2 ends,

i intend to replace it with garden sleepers in the not too distant future, goint to use them as path edging as well when i finally tidy the garden / lawn up,
