My daft dog has torn her cruciate ligament!

Recommended Posts

 Yup, apparently it's been a grumbling injury as her claws on one foot were longer than the other so the vet said she'd probably been "guarding" it. She started limping two weeks or so ago, vet checked and couldn't find anything wrong, we rested it, she's fine when she exercises, it's when she's rested that she struggles to get up. So, cue referral to specialist, x-ray, almost certainly an operation - and when your dog weighs nearly 10 stone that's a LOT of anaesthetic! Thank goodness for pet insurance!

No, she's not overweight, there's hardly any fat on her, just handfuls of wrinkly skin! (know how she feels - they say owners look like their dogs! :D ) She was the smallest of her litter, still is I think, it's that mastiff breeding, great big loping lumps!

BeckyBoo - what a gorgeous dog. Have always fancied a "larger breed" - almost brought one home form the dogs' home  Alas we don't have the sapce in our lil' cottage :(

The same thing happened to my first SBT boy - and I didn't have insurance! That was a lean month I can tell you ...

Good luck, here's hoping the op is a success and she recovers quickly ...

Kind rgds,

Aww, poor girl :( . Sounds sore :( . Fingers & paws crossed here for a quick recovery  .

Riley says he doesn't recommend that "cage rest" nonsense at the vets - top tip: keep barking and they'll let you out to sit at reception :lol: .

Re pet insurance, our excess is £120 and our vet bill was £136  . I think I might just cancel it once he's fully recovered  .

Hi mate- Zeus did in one of his last year the vet bill was £3000- guess who had forgotten to renew the cover?:whistle:

Its 12 weeks box rest afterwards. If you can get a referral to Fitzpatrick in Eashing (about half an hour away from you) he is one of the best in the country, he fixed my boy.

Best of luck

She is going to Fitzpatrick - good to hear a recommendation and just as well I haven't sold her cage yet from when she was a pup - how on earth I'll keep her confined for 12 weeks I don't know, she's massive and her cage is big but not all that big - she'll be miserable :(

The worst thing that she can do is stair or getting on and off furniture. If you can keep her calm and quite ( ) without using a cage you will be OK. She really should only be getting up to go to the loo and back in the early days post op- easier said than done maybe if she is full of the joys of spring

Thanks for the ideas, she's not allowed upstairs anyway because of her size although she very occasionally sneaks up there and we've got a stair gate for exactly that reason. Unfortunately she has taken over a two seater sofa as her bed so maybe that's what caused it getting up and down. I'll move the stair gate to the kitchen where her proper bed is and reclaim the sofa, that won't be a bad thing anyway!

Has to be said, she's not an energetic dog, she'll quite happily veg on her bed all day as long as there's someone around - she does sleep a lot" :D
