Eggs taste horrible from older hens?

Just a quick question :D

 

When my Rose was around 18 months old, her eggs changed. They went from being tasty and nice to watery and horrible. The whites stopped setting properly and had a texture like a soggy sponge.

If they were fried-the white would spread out and not set properly, boiled they were watery and spongy and even poached were just useless.

Also her shell quality declined and were much thinner despite various calcium boosting things added to her diet.

 

Now Brandee is around the same age and her whites are going the same. She rarely lays but when she does, the eggs are just not nice to eat at all.

 

Could this be an age thing?

Such a shame really as the eggs are no good to give away or use ourselves. Feels like such a waste.

 

Now we only have Jasmine laying and so far her eggs are fine but for how long?

 

Has anyone else noticed this or is there something wrong with my girls?

I have read about infectious bronchitis and the problems seem to fit but surely they would have all had it at the same time?

Sorry i don't have a clue (My girls are young)

 

Don't chook ( :wink::roll: ) the eggs away give em to the girls.

 

We don't like to eat the girls eggs (but we still eat chicken :? ) so we give the eggs to all the pets (Including the tortoises)

 

 

I'm pretty sure someone with older hens will be along soon :D

Glad you posted this Jay as I thought I was imagining it.

 

Only 2 out of 4 old hybrid girls laying now, and I poached some eggs the other day and they were watery, bubbly whites which tasted a bit odd to me. But my kids didn't notice.

 

So now I just use them for baking and scrambling.

 

Annoying that I have to buy eggs now to suppliment their output but then my girls are enjoying a happy freeloading retirement with me. Bless them...... wouldn't be without them though even with no eggs.

My 2 older hybrids are like this. One of them lays eggs with ok shells but very watery whites, they are ok to poach on the day of laying but no good after that, the other lays very thin shelled eggs that have better whites but can't be boiled because the shells are too thin.

 

The eggs are great for omelettes and scrambled egg and baking and cooking.

Hi,

I was just about to post my own topic when I saw this thread.

 

I only got my 4 chickens in February and Shirley Valentine (my Merrydale Blue)about a month ago stopped laying any eggs at all for 2 weeks. She is now laying again but the eggs are thin shelled ones with very watery whites just like has been described above. The whites don't fry or poach properly so I've been giving them to the dog who eats them very happily. The other 3 are all laying eggs as normal.

 

As she's only about 9 months old does anyone have any idea why this might be/if there is anything I can do.
