Anyone kept an unexpected cockerel?

Recommended Posts

ours are made of plain heavy duty beige canvas and cost £5 for L/F and £7.50 for extra large (fits our extra large orps, large is ok for the smaller jubilees) from a lady who makes them. Will try to dig out her email if anyone is interested. You only really need them if you notice cockeral damage, tho you could use them for prevention if you wanted. Basically feathers on hens backs, sides near the tail get pulled out (by spurs and beak) as he mounts and gets comfy and suddenly you realise they are oven ready - it was worst with our smallest hen as she has less feathery coverage. As I said, orps are large lumps! We also have a poland with cockeral damage on her head (boys hold on by grabbing the comb/hairdo). It is a 2 person job putting them on for ease - but yes they do work. We put them on a few months ago and I'm hoping that when the hens stop laying in Sept/Oct he'll calm down a bit and leave them alone and then the saddles will come off.

Well, tomorrow I am getting an 8 month old booted bantam boy.

I live in a council house with neighbours all around.

I rang the council to ask them if I am allowed him and they said YES :dance:

Providing I keep him quiet until a reasonable hour in the morning there is nothing anyone can do :D

Even if someone complained about the noise during the day-so long as it is not first thing in the morning, they won't have a leg to stand on

None of my neighbours care enough about me and my family to stop shouting and swearing, playing loud music, revving cars and motorbikes at all hours, slamming doors etc so do I feel guilty?? Nope

Now, I rang our council today and was told it wasn't as simple as just keeping one quiet between 11.00pm to 8.00am. The EH officer said if there were complaints about daytime noise they would have to investigate and I got the impression it wouldn't be looked on favourably :?
