I found one, emailed my interest and got this FAB reply - I'm definitely going!: Hi Laurie, Lovely to hear from you! Our W.I. was founded earlier this year after I heard about various institutes in London who were reinvigorating the W.I. by breaking the stereotypes surrounding the W.I. (Shoreditch Sisters and Fulham W.I. for example) Our ethos is a blend of traditional institute activities and a modern twist; our list of activites is varied and growing! Our youngest member is 18 and our oldest is around 45 but we welcome any age and background. You can visit our Facebook page by searching for York Women's Institute, there's details of past meetings, links, and our events programme. I'll add you as a friend and invite you to our next meetings. If a member is not on Facebook we also keep in contact with our members via a mailing list which I can add you to if you want. Here are some of the activities that are planned over the next 12 months: Wine Tasting - how to match wine to your menus Victoria Sponge competition Trips to St Gemma's Vintage Fair and Leeds Town Hall Vintage Fair Trip to Harrogate Knitting and Stitching Fair Frock Exchanges (search 'swishing' on google!) Craft Workshops and materials/pattern exchange Participating in the 2010 Dragon Boat Race We're also hoping to set up community projects such as a communal allotment, working with Friends of St Nicholas Fields and supporting York's Women's Refuge. Ms Marple Posted August 20, 2009 Share Posted August 20, 2009 How wierd! Guess where I went tonight . Yes to try out my nearest WI!! I had looked at your posts from Omletina's and also hit upon them because of their resolution to support the honeybee. However, I agree with many of the earlier posts but I am not sure whether it is for me yet I was the youngest there at 49 and I know that I look younger than my age - how much longer that will last I don't know, but they were almost all retired or about to. I do think that it is important to keep things like this running and that younger members are desperately needed and so I feel that I should try to get involved - somehow i need to find some younger folk to join or set up my own - but I am not sure I have time yet, once I go back to school life becomes chaotic. I lloked around for info and my closest group meet during the day and have a significantly older profile. In Didsbury, near where we used to live, they appear to have set up a very modern WI with a really broad age-range. This sounds great. I really shouldn't be the youngest. Not sure what to do next.. IT'S WEIRDY BEARDY LOCAL TO KENT ELUSIVE BAT N TRAP!!! I want to play bat and trap. Times were they were ten a penny a pub, ah them were's the days... We should have an Omlet Bat n Trap day. Turns out I'm not in East Kent but West Kent and they have WIs here which have an almost Masonically formal structure and a calendar of thrills and spills of the mainly cards and floral variety including: Hand-tied bouquets (grab flowers, put ribbon round flowers) Flower arranging (grab flowers, put flowers in oasis) A Kent day (no idea what that means but it's bound to involve flowers) A medieval autumn day (grab autumnal flowers and put them in a roasted hog's head?) A compost workshop (grab flowers, put flowers in compost bin) And a fair bit of Whist. Whist, I ask you! And some card-making/s"Ooops, word censored!"booking stuff. Which probably involves putting flowers on a card or putting some flowers in a s"Ooops, word censored!"book. And curling. Which sounds fun if it's the sport, but not if it's paper curling. In which case I assume they curl paper into flowers. Also, they refer to everyone as Mrs Dulcie Soandso and Miss Prim Proper and the like. The 1950s, I'm up for. The 1850s, not so much. HennyPenny Posted August 22, 2009 Share Posted August 22, 2009 Don't despair - our WI is in West Kent and we've only done flower arranging once in two years. We do make Christmas wreaths but that generally involves enough mulled wine to make it a very convivial event indeed! I have no artistic skill with flowers or foliage whatsoever, so every year I carefully stick holly and assorted greenery into an oasis ring, my skill improving with every glass of wine I think, until I hold it up and everything falls off! Still, usually makes a half decent table centrepiece with a few candles in the middle. BTW - Curling does actually refer to the sport!
