Fresh back from Omletina's amazing crafty weekend, frequented by a host of WI baking and knitting geniuses, I promptly leapt on to the WI website to find that the they don't have any meetings in East Kent north of Sittingbourne.

I am amazed by this. Gravesend and Medway are populous areas with some cute villages in the middle of them. Even Sheppey - weird, bleak Sheppey - has some WIs.

I want a WI!!! And I have told them we need to set one up if they do not exist in these parts.

I need my jam and I sure as heck need my Jerusalem! :D

You will have to set one up Anna! :D

I've just checked what's on for our local WI - in November they are having a Multi-Activity Day to include clayshooting, air rifle and pistol, archery and blind jeep driving.:shock: What happened to crafts and baking?? Care to join me??

Snowy that sounds like the bomb. Jam, Jerusalem, shootin', huntin' AND knitting!!!:shock::shock::clap::clap::clap:

Alas, I have but four spare weekends between now and 2010 so I don't think I should book up the diary any more or my husband-to-be might end up my ex-husband before Christmas!

But if they do anything like that from Spring I am SO there (minus my crochet - promise! )

I'm a member of our local Townswomens Guild - the youngest member at 44 - main age group is about 70 so I can't see them blind jeep driving really - and I definitely think the calendar is a no-no -:whistle: We have some good speakers visit but any trips are generally to garden centres etc. I might have to look into the WI and see if there is something round here - sounds a little more active so might suit a bit more, and as long as they don't clash I get to enjoy/suuport both.

I have to say I have often thought about joining one - they do say they are trying to get younger members. Somehow I don't think that can be the case in Hernia Bay - they meet at 10am mid week and this is their diary..... yours sounds so much more exciting!

It is worth having a look on their website - some groups appear to have more going on than others, and it looks quite easy to set up your own group. Maybe we could have a virtual Omlet WI  They also have a college in Oxford, Denman College with 3 day residential courses on just about every subject under the sun!!

I've made enquiries about my local groups and/or forming my own as there isn't one in my village (the hunting/shooting one is in Leicestershire, but I don't know which village group has organised it)

OK. Confession time. My name is HennyPenny and......I am a member of the WI!

Two years ago, about a year after we moved to rural Kent, a flyer came through the front door asking if I'd ever considered the WI and inviting me to the local pub (always a good idea) to talk about starting one specially aimed at 'younger' women. Well, more than 50 women of all ages turned up and the Otterden WI was formed!

So, my advice to you is, if you'd like to join a WI that will provide the sort of activities that you might like - find out if there's interest in your area and - start one!

We're still finding our way after 2 years but we're having great fun on the way.

Go for it!

I'm a member (joined a couple of years ago after lots of humming and hawing) and I know the WI is really, really keen to get younger women involved. There are lots of younger women setting their own WIs up - in cities, towns and villages - so if you want to - go for it. Get in touch with the WI (either the main National WI through the website or your local county federation - again - contact details are on the website) - and they will give you lots of help....

Go for it! The WI needs young keen women to join, or it will die in a few years time.... and that will be a great loss!

I'm one of the younger members of my WI - which is really well established (it's been going for over 75 years). I'm one of the minority who work, so I do miss out on a lot of things they organise during the day, but our meetings are one evening a month and they are generally good evenings. However, we don't do exciting things like forensics, or shooting etc etc - I'm going to suggest it!!

Having said that I'm one of the youngest members, in terms of energy, liveliness and social life, I am definitely lagging well behind a lot of the ladies in their 70s and 80s!! It's obviously very good for you!

Jill

(PS oh and I'm not on commission!!)

I moved to Somerset 3 yrs ago and immediately looked up the WI after hearing about it's new "image". Not so here am afraid, seemed to be more interested in whether or not I have a car available ...

My new neighbour (older than I) called me last evening. She had been invited to a WI garden party. "Crisps and limp celery with squirty cheese" she said! Not for her either - especially the calendar of events

I was so looking forward to Aga cooking, jam making, flower arranging - not to mention all the other "country pursuits" available here :(

Rgds,

I went to a localish WI a couple of months back (to talk about chickens) and I they didn't even have any cake :shock::shock::shock:

I'd told the chickens that there'd be cake, but only a cuppa and a biscuit!

Most of the members were 'older', probably at least 60% of them over 60 years old. Lovely ladies, but not my kinda group.

If I had the time, I'd set one up locally.
