Pure Breeds - what age are they likely to lay

Recommended Posts

My 4 Wernlas girls are between 26 and 28 weeks old now. 3 of the 4 are really developing fast with big bright red combs although not crouching yet. What age can I expect them to lay?

They are a Barnebar, a Cream Legbar, a Wernlas Olive and a Gold Laced Wyandotte (although I know she is going to be ages as has a pimple rather than a comb :D )

well in theory they should be ready to lay now - so you might be lucky and get some eggs from now and for next 8-10 weeks if they aren't winter layers - it will go on longer if they are winter girls. I'm not sure if any of those breeds are known as winter layers (particularly not sure of the Olive heritage?) - if not and they don't lay say by EO September then you probably won't see an egg till the NYear I'm afraid.

To help - cut down/out treats, and make sure they are wormed.

Debs our big girls didn't start till the beginning of October, then stopped just before Christmas for about 2 weeks. Cheyenne in the meantime started at the beginning of January and laid more than the other 2 in her short couple of months before her demise. Looking at Squirt, she is almost as round as the other two big girls, so I think once I have gone through the growers, she will produce quickly. Tipsy is more of a Speedy Gonzales and still looks like a baby. Not talking about Jiuj - hell will freeze over before he produces. His wattles are getting more dangly. But so handsome. He still squeaks.
