sammyantha
I've had my 3 girls for two weeks today and have already had 10 eggs between them! I'm dead impressed. They've grown a bit, their wattles and combs are all a bit redder and bigger and their eyes are getting redder and Gertrude and Mavis do that funny squatting thing when you come near them! Anyway, we know that two of them (pretty certain it's Gertrude and Mavis) are laying because we've had a day when there were two eggs in the nesting box, but were wondering if there's a way of telling who laid what. For example, 3 of the eggs we've had in the last few days are nicely speckled with dark brown flecks. Is it likely these have come from the same hen? Also, one of our eggs, although not huge, looks like it might be a double yolker. It was about 70g (most of our eggs have been 44-54g so far, so definitely bigger than usual) and it's a rather elongated shape. I've held it up against a light and there's a big dark mass, rather than any distinct shapes, so i'm probably not looking right! Can't wait to crack it! We have my mother in law and her boyfriend coming to stay this weekend and so we're really looking forward to serving their eggs for breakfast! Anyway, that's enough of my ponderings - nothing important, just wondering! Sam
Happy chickens!
As far as I know the only way (unless you've got chickens which lay different types of eggs) is to spend a very happy morning chicken watching. Over time you get to know who lays what - I have one girls who always lays a really really perfect egg, another who lays a slightly mishapen one etc. Happy chicken watching! Space Chick
What breeds are they? My Speckledy (Sarah-Jane) lays a lovely speckled egg. I've only had my ex batts a week, and already I can tell the difference between their eggs, so you will get to know who laid what
sammyantha
lol, I've spent all day chicken watching! Though I disturbed Mavis whilst she was laying. I opened the eggport to check how much straw was there and she was in the nesting box (which is where she sits a alot when the weather isn't so great) and I gave her a stroke and had a feel underneath her to see if there was an egg and I felt something wet on the back of my hand and realised it was an egg bulging out of her! Ewwww. Anyway, 10 minutes later it was out and it was speckled. To answer the question about breed - Gertrude is a Miss Pepperpot, Mavis and Gertrude are Gingernut rangers. Anyway, I'm off on holiday from work for next week as well so I've got all of next week to chicken watch and maybe work out who lays what! Egluntyne
I've never really been able to tell which hen lays which bog standard beige egg.
Guest
If you just have the 3 hens you will learn which hen lays which egg - its likely that the colours and certainly the shapes will be slightly different for each hen.
Daphne
Out of 9 hens, I know 4 hens' eggs. It doesn't help that I genuinely can't tell the difference between 2 of the hens!
moochoo
It takes a few good hours nest box watching but each egg has it's own shape, colour and texture. I'm sure you'll work it out you just have to wait after each one is on the nest to initially see who's is who's.
poachedegg
I wouldn't have a clue! Though when my Speckledy starts to lay, I hopefully will know hers.
-sarahjayne
at first i didnt have a clue, having 4 what i believed to be standard egg layers actually turns out they all lay different eggs! First I worked out who lays where, in which nestbox. Martha despite being a LF and laying before anyone else still lays banty sized eggs which are pinky in colour. Rhonda lays dark brown, even the 2 of the same breed Evie and Esmee lay different eggs, Evie is a Big Girl, not fat, but she is very tall and has great big thick legs and is long in body size, she lays long brown shiny eggs, and esmee her not-so twin lays average sized pale brown eggs. So after a while you will pick up on these small differences like i have, at first they all looked the same to me but now i know
Space Chick
The is nothing quite like having an egg for breakfast, knowing who laid it and when, and being able to thank the girl for her hard work
