Up to my neck in pumpkins

Recommended Posts

Went to allotment tonight having been away and courgettes are marrows and pumpkins are well BIG. For some reason I used the whole packet of seeds and despite givng loads of plants away I have about 6 left and at least 5 pumpkins growing. picked the biggest a 12 pounder and hauled it to the car. Cinderella would've been pleased with it. Now how do i store it, i cant see it lasting till Halloween. I have a lovely recipe for Pumpkin soup and can do a mean pie. may also chutney it too. Any ideas gratefully received. The squashy type veg have gone mad this year, my friend has 7-8 marrows on her plot! i know someone had a fridge of courgettes on forum so will wait and see if you lot come up trumps

We have 7 pumpkins, all larger than your average basket ball :lol:

so, we are working through friends and family to push them off to people. anyone will take them off you for halloween :D

with regards to storing, we just have ours in carboard boxes in the conservatory :D , they do keep rather well :D

so...note to self...dont plant a whole packet of seeds??

I planted 5 seeds, put in 4 plants and we've lost 2 pumps to rot and brats breaking into the allotment  , so 4 seeds would have been fine :D

I read that after picking, you are supposed to leave them out in the sun to go really golden. My neighbours gave up their alottment plot and they have a couple of large pumpkins that have crept onto my plot and developed fruits. Stolen pumpkins! They are coming along nicely! 8)

they keep better if they're ripened natually I've still got one that was harvested 12 month ago that ripened on the vine this one isn't even a very good keeper the others that I know are capable of lasting 2 or 3 years were ripened under cover in the greenhouse 2 rotted before christmas one in January the other 2 whent before Febuary
