Having a go at hatching *update*

Recommended Posts

Well one of our silkis has gone broody for the 2nd time so we have just got a mix of eggs to hatch. Bought 10 and have put 4 under her little bum and the remaining 6 in the incy to see what happens.

We have been told that feriility cant be guaranteed this time of year :? so we will see.

It would be nice even if we only got one from the broody and one from the incy.

Fingers crossed everyone, will keep you updated

** just moved chook of her nest to get her to eat and heard a little cheep! not yet hatched yet though so will be looking for a little head tommorow :)

Nothing heard yet in the incy so fingers crossed there too :|

We have candled the ones in the incy and 4 look promising! Havnt been able to do the ones under the broody yet! I just hope she gets at least one to hatch out.

As for the boys, we have already arranged for a local breeder to take them .

We wouldnt have started this if we didnt have anywhere to send any boys.

Its 12 days in now we have just candled the ones in the incy, the light sussex is definatly growing and moving.

The others im really not sure about, they all have air pockets at the end of the egg and i think something inside but not convinced anything in them moving.

As for the ones under the broody, i only candled one cos i didnt want to upset her, again an air pocket and what looks like something inside but again not moving. the shel on this egg was very thick so not sure it that makes it harder.

I have read somewhere that if a broody sits on eggs after 10 days if they are not fertile she will kick them out. Does anyone know if this is true or not.

Am not going to candle anymore now. just hope and pray

In that case then it sounds promising :)

This is her first time of hatching so we really hope she does well and gets at least one baby to look after.

All ready indoors now for when/if the eggs in the incy hatch.

Only problem now is we have 2 big eggs and 3 banty eggs in incy and i believe banty eggs hatch after 18 days and big hens hatch after 21 so not to sure when to stop the turning mecinisim.

~please someone tell me if im right or wrong, i now know we should never have mixed banty and big eggs and have learnt from it.

Any more sugestions are gratefully recomended

Its not really that you shouldn't mix them - although it isn't advised - but set them 3 days apart.

We planned to set 12 eggs on the same day, but 6 arrived a few days late so we ended up borrowing another incubator to use as a hatcher which worked really well :D

Is that a posibility for you? because you'll also need to up the humidity when you stop turning them.

If not if it were me I'd turn off the turning motor on day 16 or 17, manually turn the LF eggs, and up the humidity on day 17 so that the bantam eggs have humidity to hatch.
