Chook n Boo Mum
Griffin, I think I have one boy and 2 girls, I hope the pics are clear enough, it's taken this long to get anything close to a clear photo !! The 2 pics around the tea bowl I think are boy, girl (purple spot), girl; on the basis that the LH one has very yellow legs and pinker headgear than the other 2, and is essentially fully feathered, whereas the other 2 are still a bit patchy. I have surmised, rightly or wrongly that the girls have more internal development than boys so their feathers take second place...is this a reasonable assumption? I keep telling "him" that he should keep his mouth shut then he can stay I had a lovely cuddle with the purple spotted baby this evening when I hooked them all out for some "forced loving".....she disappeared inside my shirt and refused to come out They all ate maggots out of my bare hands today too , well they enjoyed them and I loved the fact that they actually came near enough to touch me...the little "boy" even shot up on my lap as I was feeding "his" mum...I can see "him" being a little monster Is it possible to confirm this for me Griffin, I'll try again tomorrow if not I'm so glad I've got a digital camera, I'd have taken rolls of film by now if I used my old one Sha x
Redwing
Griffin is so good at this I am going for purple spot being a girl and the other two being boys Boys normally take longer to feather up along their backs if that helps They are very cute
Chook n Boo Mum
Purple Spot is almost identical to the RH chick with colouring and feathering, and LH chick has such pronounced bright yellow legs as shows in the perching pic....I am so confused Sha x
Griffin
My nose was just millimetres away from my monitor I was trying really hard to see the comb of the chick on the left in the last pic! I think you're right, purple spot is a girl, the other two are boys. It's really obvious from about a week old with the Sussex in terms of comb development. They don't get massive combs but at that age there is a very slight difference. Get some close up profile pics from the side and I'll tell you for definite. Ignore the feathering and leg colour (which incidentally should be white in Sussex, yours should fade), it's combs you need to go on at this age. I sold my Speckled Sussex pullet yesterday I didn't want to but I can't keep everything I've hatched this year and she had the offer of a really nice home. Her brother is still here, he'll probably be Christmas dinner! After Tiger Lilys chicks hatch this week I'm having a break from hatching for this year but will start again after Christmas with more Speckled Sussex because I've loved having them, they're easy to sex, very strong robust little chicks and just so easy to look after. Our little lad is built like a tank already!
Chook n Boo Mum
There isn't much difference in the physical size of the babies...... if it's stopped raining, I'll go out now & see if I can get some clearer comb pics, snuggled up to my jumper...they will be very unimpressed but I desperately want to know..........back in a bit........... Egluntyne
I agree, it looks as if Purple Spot = girl, the other two = boy.
