Buying table bird hatching eggs

Recommended Posts

The lead I had was no joy - they have stopped laying until next year apparently. I really want a meat breed as we live close to other houses, so I canot keep something that gets old enough to crow! I will keep searching as she is still broody.

Try Simon - Poulet on River Cottage - he often has eggs as well as day olds and he will do small numbers. We've had day olds from him but now he delivers to Cotswold Chickens so it is easier for us to pick them up from there.

Thanks Lesley - yes my first lot last year were his via Jude - I funnily enough e-mailed him this afternoon and he does do hatching eggs by post, they get sent out Mondays. I have e-mailed him back about payment method, so I am hoping we can get it sorted for a Monday delivery ...so you can bet she will stop being broody about Sunday :lol:

I also contacted someone about some Ixworths as they are supposed to be good as table birds, but they haven't returned my call.

Favorolles and light sussex are just too nice looking for me to see them as 'just meat birds without character' - Ixworths are all white so I though I could cope with them or some Sasso's.

In anyone is interested Simon charges: 35p an egg, 60p per half dozen packaging, £9 + VAT courier for up to 180 eggs (I know my one broody cannot cope with that many!

Smart chicks are supposed to be good they supply Sasso hatching eggs through the post: http://www.smart-chicks.co.uk/home.html

I contacted them first - they have now stopped laying and cannot supply any until the Spring - I also found out they deliver day old chicks for collection about 15mins from me. They were not aware of anyone else in the UK that provides a postal service.
