crossbreeding?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have a black brahma which was supposed to be a hen, but after a loud gurgly cock a doodle doo noise and some research on the internet, i think that there is a very big chance that she could be a cockerel. We will have to see how it turns out, but i was thinking. I would lve to hatch some of my own chicks and if my brahma was a cockerel, i wouldnt have to buy eggs of the internet and i know who the parents are. But I dont have any brahma hens. I have a light sussex, a maran and two ex batts ( i wouldnt use the ex batts though). Can you cross breed brahmas with marans and brahmas with light sussex's? Are there any problems and does anyone know how the chicks will turn out. Also is it easy to sell cross breeds of chickens?

Firstly, are you sure you hen is in fact a cockerel?

Here is a brahma cockerel...

And a hen...

As you can see the stance, comb etc. are all different.

Secondly re crossing. Yes you could cross your brahma with a maran and sussex however these would probably be big, lazy birds that don't lay much. And these would almost defiantly not sell.

Obviously it is up to you but please take into account what you will do with the resulting cockerels.

Good Luck

Tom

Im about 80% sure that squishy is male. I looked at cockerel and hen pictures on the internet and i think shes a bit too long and lanky to be female. She struts around the garden like she owns the place, like i imagine a cock would act, whereas my four other hens are a lot more timid. Shes only 3 months old and her face looks like a hens, but yesterday she definatly crowed.

Part of me hopes that im wrong, but only time will tell and im not an expert, but other than her face, she just looks like a cockerel to me. What will the neighbours think?! :anxious:

Thanks for the info
