balti
hi, I have 4 chickens, and when i get my WIR built i was thinking about getting a turkey. Has anyone else mixed chickens and turkeys?. I guess i would have to build a separate house for it. Are they ok on their own ? and do they get on? Thanks Trace
Snowy
I've no idea how they would get on in a confined space, but a farmer friend has them together free ranging in an orchard. That is very different to a WIR though
balti
Mm - some say chickens carry a parasite that if turkey gets can be real bad, but i guess the turkey is a bigger animal and would need free ranging only. They do get to roam around but mostly stay in run, purely as chickens eat EVERYTHING and trash when they are out too long. If the turkey has more manners in the garden? he could come out more.... Lewis
Yep, chickens can pass blackhead disease onto turkeys, so you may be better keeping it separate, but I think it may stay in the soil if the chickens have been on it? I have seen people that keep chickens and turkeys (and guinea fowl!) together in the same large run though. Turkeys can be very loud and will need a bit more space than the chickens.
