I was all set to go and get the Sony at the weekend as the J Lewis price is really good but then I saw the plan for the wireless Sony (quite a bit more expensive though)
Caballero
Hi We have both got Sony e readers from when they first came out from Waterstones, the John Lewis price seems great as I paid £199 each. I would recommend using the Americian sites to buy e-books but if they ask for your address and your in the UK you may find that you are not aloud to purchase from them as there only licenced to sell in the States and Canada. You can get round this sometimes by using your Paypal account We take them every where with us we even have a 12v charging lead which allows us to recharge practically anywhere car or boat. also buy a clip on light from Maplins for £2.99 or so and you don't disturb anybody. You can even change the font size at the press of a button great if you need reading glass like me. I have attached a link for Waterstones who have the new readers in stock but i'm morethan happy with the first model and at JL's price even better. http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/navigate.do?pPageID=1918 I wonder if you are aloud to swap titles with each other or is it the same as music. That would be interesting Regards Phil

Chucky Mama
Well, I've just ordered one. I went into the local Sony centre today to have a look and have gone for the pocket Sony ereader as it was not an awful lot smaller but likes the controls more than the standard sized one. I have ordered a silver one from WHSmiths as they are at £159 the cheapest I could find. The J Lewis price of £149 is for the larger one. They apparently come with a disc containing a whole load of the classics which are free as they no longer have a copyright. The Sony guys said that Google are going to get involved in cheap ebooks etc for the SOny reader very soon. They also said that you can store photos, music and also swap books with others. Can't wait for it to arrive oh, forgot to say, there is a touch version coming soon but I am not a huge fan of 'touch' and they will be about £50 more. Chucky Mama
It has arrived I have so much work to do but couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Unfortunately I appear to have selected German as my language and so now I have a German version of a Stephen King book up . Have put it away until later. Must learn to be more patient
docsquid
Has anybody got an Amazon Kindle yet. They are available in the UK but you have to order them from the US, and they come with a US plug so you have to buy an adapter to use in UK plug sockets. BUT I like the idea that you can download newspapers and so on wherever you are. I rarely read fiction - I like science, ecology, biography, historical - lots of non-fiction books, and Amazon have a really good range of these, even if they are on the American site. They still feature British books. I'm very tempted, but would like to see if anybody has one first!
Cinnamon
I so nearly got a Kindle, but decided to hold off until the new Apple reader is launched, then see how the reviews look. The Kindle is the one that appeals most to me of the ones available at the moment.
Chucky Mama
I love my Sony, we saw Sherlock Holmes at the cinema last week and ES was quite taken with it. I downloaded loads of free Sherlock Holmes books for him which is great. Only problem is he is using my Ereader! (OK though as am reading a book that I was bought for Christmas - a real paper one!) ..lay a little egg for me
There are lots of free e-book sites. These are my favourites: http://manybooks.net/ has lots of classic books and also many "creative commons" publications which are new books that are made available free online http://www.truly-free.org/ this is a "lending library" where you are allowed to "borrow" up to 5 books at a time and to "return" them you delete them from your computer. It is a fairly eclectic mix of modern books (I got the recent Stig Larsson series ["The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc"] from here) http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/ lots of free classic books Happy reading! fluffyknickers
I love my Sony ereader too. You can also download from some libraries - check out your library website. x
docsquid
Well, after looking at every review I could read, I narrowed it down to the Sony Touch and the iRiver Story. The reviews were about equal for the two. The iRiver had more reliable software and a keypad, but the build quality wasn't good and it doesn't have a case. The Sony had good build quality, dubious battery life and dodgy software. I decided, in the end, to go with Sony. The main thing was build quality, plus the fact that it is ubiquitous. And John Lewis do it in red. Also I had an iRiver MP3 player and it was good, but not that good. I'd prefer to stick with a big brand and know what I am getting, really. A couple of people have suggested alternative software for the Sony that is easier to use than their own offering, but obviously I'll have to wait and see how it all works. Can't wait for it to arrive, so I can start getting books for it!
Cinnamon
Just out of interest Docsquid, what put you off the Kindle?
docsquid
In the end I decided against the Kindle because it locks you into buying from Amazon. Also, you actually get an American Kindle and have to buy a UK plug adapter. You also have to buy e-books from the US Amazon site, which is heavily weighted towards US books, or US editions of books. I've gone with Sony, but in future would re-consider if the Kindle were more flexible to other formats.
