A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I cant get rid of this feeling that we are teaching our children not to trust anyone who doesnt have a piece of paper.......this cant be good for them in their future nor society in general. That is absolutely it, isn't it?
TAJ
My daughter's junior school was doing full checks on any parents/helpers, whether helping out in school or driving kids to after school matches 6 years ago - personally I was unaware it wasn't a legal requirement already and it didn't stop any of us helping out so what is the issue? Tracy If it were to stay the same it wouldn't be too bad, but everyone will have to pay £64 to be added to a central register. I already pay £76 a year to maintain my nursing registration. At least that can be ofset against tax. I don't want to have to pay an extra £64 to be included on another register. They haven't yet said how often that registration will need to be renewed either. Happy chickens!
Seems like I'm not the only one going Grrrr! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/6180325/Anger-grows-over-paedophile-checks-on-parents-who-volunteer-to-help-with-childrens-activities.html Even the NSPCC thinks the new system is over the top and if there's one organisation with child safety at the top they are it! You are quite right Tracy, schools etc already CRB check volunteers, but this new system will bring far more people into it, and will be based on allegations as well as prosecutions. Clubs run by volunteers could be liable for big fines if they don't do it right and I agree 100% with Miffy that we are creating a system that is more about paperwork than common sense. I personally will have to think hard about continuing my volunteer role - not because I or any of the other volunteers wil have to undertake the checks, but because I, as the main organiser, could be fined for not ensuring a parent who gives lifts to sports teams, or helps with one of our fundraising events has completed them properly, even if they have been known to me for many years. C&T
I think that will be the biggest impact... Who volunteers to help run a football club (for example) to spend all their time processing paperwork rather than playing football, and then have the risk of being fined thrown in as well? There won't be a queue for the role, and it will be the children (ironically?) that lose out as these extra activities cease.
Clur
I help out at the church kids' club on a Sunday, and have an up-to-date CRB check. I'd like to help an occasional basis with school trips but I need a separate CRB check for that. My dad is CRB checked as he works with the elderly and disabled but he can't help out at my church or his grandkids' schools as he would need two other CRB checks for that. I can't volunteer at his place of work as I don't have the relvant CRB..... I have no issue whatsoever with being CRB checked, and it's reassuring to know as a parent that people working with my children are checked. BUT it seems (to me) to be completely ludicrous there isn't any centralised data. One check should be enough - or should be graded - to enable people to volunteer with multiple organisations!
