Broody Cage advice please - sorted I think!

Recommended Posts

Our Speckledy has gone broody today

Been on the nestbox most of the day, I've chucked her out a few times but wondered if she had laying problems at first because she wasn't hot or had feathers missing.

Lifted her again 1/2 hour ago and found her bald bits and she was boiling hot - so dunked her and OH has gone to get a broody cage - white wire pet carrier type.

Question is - do we need to put some type of roosting perch in or will she just hunch down on the wire, we intend to bring her in to the conservatory at night.

They are all in the garden but Charlotte is currently pacing up and down the ladder protesting as I've shut the door

Just put the smaller of the roosting bars from the eglu in! She's not impressed with imprisonment :shameonu:

Claret had a superb design for a broody cage.... its just a wire pet carrier with a water bottle and coup bowl of food in... the broody lady is placed inside it and the cage is placed on bricks inside the run, so she can still see and chat to the other girls but can't get too hot (they go broody when their body temp goes up)... leave her in for 3 days, 24hrs a day then let her out and she should cease to brood :D

We tried to stop Pepper from brooding in the nest box by putting a half-brick in there (so she couldn't get comfy). She tried to incubate the brick.. :anxious::lol:
