ali-s
Can anyone recomend a cat flap? I have been looking at a few (Argos, PAH) but the ones I am interested in haven't got very good reviews I can't have a magnetic one as Miley doesn't wear a collar. Ideally I would like one which locks four ways but reports on these say that Cats can force the doors open and break the mechanisms. The cat flap will be sited on a wooden porch wall as I don't want to spoil my wooden door. I would love for her to be able to have access to the kitchen but we do not have an outside door to the kitchen and the walls of the cottage are 3ft thick and made of sandstone, so I don't think it will be possible to have one fitted. Redwing
You can get them put in windows too if you have a suitable window, I used to work for a double glazing firm and we had them put in double glazed panes for customers all the time
Olly
I was going to suggest a window, you can always put something (bench? plant pot?) outside to help the cat jump up there. I've got a Staywell 4-way and it's lasted quite well, only used by one cat. Mine is not usually locked though, and it might not stand up to a determined cat wanting to get out. Chucky Mama
You can get cat flaps now (name escapes me) that are activated by the cat's ID chip.
henriette
The following company supplies cat flaps operated by the cat's id, but I am afraid I don't know how good they are. www.PetPorte.com
Fur 'n' Feathers
We've got a simple lock/unlock one. Our cats don't wear collars and they're in/out all the time 24/7. It's the 2nd house we've had one in and they seem to be fine for us.
Lydia
We've got a lock 4 ways one and these days it's mostly permanently locked to stop next-door-but-one's cat visiting, spraying inside and generally upsetting ours. Every day the cat flap endures a paw banging championship both sides between Freddie (next door but one's large, strong, male tabby) and Meg (our aging black and white moggy). Both sides give it all they've got too! Meg has always banged it and clawed it quite ruthlessly (she decided as a kitten that it was the best way to get it to work, even when it was open!) So far it's stood up to the abuse and we've had it nearly 10 years. Therefore, I'd say they were pretty sturdy.
Aunty e
We have the other microchip one, which is called sureflap. It's been brilliant at keeping the other cats out and hasn't needed the battery changing yet, and we've had it for ages with five cats It's cheaper too Before that we had a catmate cat flap, which locked really well. The only time the cats bashed through it, they literally tore it from the wall (queen in season aided and abetted by a big feral tom) as they couldn't break the lock. Pretty cheap too. welovemarmite
we have a sureflap id chip one too and its great. Our monsters kept leaving their collars somewhere so we gave up with them. It works fine except for our big boy boris. He is a bengal and is very big (not fat!!) so his chip is further back than the average cat and sometimes he has to try a bit harder for his to be read.... ali-s
Thanks for the replies. OH doesn't want to put a cat flap into the window so I am going to get a bog standard lock/unlock one as we do not have any neighbourhood cats here. The porch is quite high up so I am thinking about buying a cube ladder to fix to the side of the porch wall for Miley to climb up, I don't think she would be able to stretch/jump up and open the cat flap door at the same time. If the flap gets broken I may look into the ones activated by Miley's microchip.
Alis girls
One of our cats used to go 1/2 way, bottle out and reverse back in Bit scarey if there was a queue
chickenNutter
We have a Staywell basic 4 way lockable one - no point getting anything else as my two boys lose collars within a couple of days, so can't get the magnetic ones. Still have major problems though as Colin has learnt how to unlock it and let himself out. No kidding, he does it with his paws round the button - he has watched us and tries to undo door k"Ooops, word censored!"s the same way. He not only lets himself out now, he breaks into our neighbours down the road (as she leaves her setting on incoming) and then unlocks hers and lets her cats out to come out to play with him! I wrote to the manufacturers Staywell explaining the problem - they never wrote back! I am expecting an ASBO on Colin at any time.
Old Speckled Hen
The following company supplies cat flaps operated by the cat's id, but I am afraid I don't know how good they are.http://www.PetPorte.com These are brill We used to get a thumping great tom visit us even bashing his way through a locked Staywell Mine is plugged into the mains. The customer service is excellent too. Hubby cut the frame too small but an email to the company resulted in a new frame free of charge
