Well, I have now been offered a very large plot of unused land behind my friend's stables which I am going to build a massive WIR on and this will have a shed inside for about 11-12 hens and 1 of my GL Orpingtons cockerels, Kellogs. What I would like to know is what people have/would put inside a shed for them? Do they need they're own entrance? what to use for a nest box? What shall I do with the window?

Thanks

Tom

PICS WOULD BE GREAT

Hi Tom :) we converted our shed. Will find the pics and post if you want.

We took off the felt roof and put onduline on instead. Cut a pop hole in it to the side of the door staright into the WIR and for the windows we painted them with timber treatment to darken them but have also now covered them with some ply to make it darker. Bung in a perch at the end opposite the door and some nesting boxes along one side and Bob's your uncle :)

We've since removed the nest box area as I found red mite there and use plastic recycling boxes on the floor instead.

I 'converted' a wendy house into a hen house for Matilda + Theodore. I built a nest box which sits under the window by the door, and put a perch across the back with a poo board under it, which I can just take out more often than doing a big clean :).

They just use the door on the wendy house, which is normally bolted overnight, but left when its really hot.

I'm planning on moving it and adding 2 more perches replacing the existing one and have 4 Joist hangers, 2 for each perch, so that I can take them out to clean them and the rest of the house, and replace them more easily.

I've seen coops for sale which are smaller than mine which can hold 12-15 birds, so at least I know they have plenty of space to fit more in
