my maran who is supposedidly about 20/21 weeks this morning made a kind of 'ka kaa' noise and similar noises throught the day, and im starting to worry she may be a he!

 

she doesnt look like a cock (comb ect..) but her tail feathers do stick slightly up.

ive already had a similar problem with one of my other chcikens who sadly turned out to be a cock and had to find a new home

 

i would of thought that if she is a cock then she would have started crowing weeks ago???(we have had her about 9 weeks) and she isnt very dominent with our 2 buff orpingtons or displaying any cock behaviour towards them

 

please help!!!!!

Is your hen a Cuckoo Marans? if so the boys are pretty easy to spot.

 

The cockerel has a much lighter colouring, quite grey, the girl is darker

No need to worry, she's definitely a she! Some hens do try to crow, especially if there isn't a male around to keep them in line. You can look forward to some lovely brown eggs in a month or so

THE MARAN CROWED

 

a friend has rehomed him and he grew into a stunning cockeral who now crows every morning.

 

it has made us think that the breeder we got him from and the cock before saw us coming!

 

but now we have a french copper maran from a different breeder

Blimey, I'd better eat my words then!! I'd have put money on him being a her from that photo - based on colour and feathering. I guess there's always the exception that proves the rule!
