Chicken boarders

i was out with the girls earlier and noticed tiggywinkle has a little bald patch under her ear/ top of her neck.... its about the size of a 10p. no bald patches anywhere else the other chooks are fine.... ive looked for mites etc and nothing. but am still a little concerned?! what are the other causes? i know they mault but i was told they doint until their second year?!

Has one of her friends been having a nibble? One of mine has a little bald patch. I've caught her sister nibbling her from time to time. I put anti-peck spray on and it stopped.

we figure that tiggywinkle is at the top of the pecking order as she is usually the ne doing all the pecking?

could she be starting to go into moult?

i thought of the moulting but she isnt even a year old and i have ben told that they dont moult in their first year? and isnt it a little late for a moult anyway?

my two year olds are having a moulterama. The red hen is really patchy and the run looks like a fox attack today. Eddie (now known as little bald eddie) just moulted all over her head, bless her.

 

I'm told that sometimes newbies moult - but I think it's more likely to be the two year olds!

My top chook, Phillip had a bald patch - caused by one of his wives lovingly nibbling him! So place in the pecking order not fool proof . And they can moult at this time of year. Someone with lots of knowledge will be along soon

Chickens moult at the most ridiculous times don't you know?!

 

I have four moulters, enough feathers to supply a duvet factory here. Why can't they moult when the weather is hot and sunny....it would make sense

One of my two hens seems to be losing feathers all the way round the top of her neck too. I posted on here about a week ago and the general consensus was that it was the start of a moult (she is about 9 months old) .

 

I have never witnessed any pecking so I think it may well be a moult. I have noticed that there are the first signs of baldness appearing at the base of her tail feathers too.

 

Terrible timing just as it is getting colder... I will have to get her a little scarf!

one of my light sussex has been quite patchy around the neck for a while now. We got her in April at POL so bit early for a moult, and she is definitly not being bullied. The feathers dont seem to come out completly - there are stumpy stalks left.

Any ideas?

The stalks are probably the new feather quills growing through. I've got an 18 week old moulting and older girl moulting I think the new feathers must itch. The youngster is always preening
