Priceless Kilo! - on a trip to the vet!

Recommended Posts

Kilo has been moulting gently for a couple of months now. Generally she's been fit & well, but when her bum started to moult she got a little peck from Krasi which has healed up.

While we were in Greece 2 weeks ago she started to wee watery poo and this continued when we came back. She's gone quite bald in a strip down to her belly, but was still quite lively & happy.

We kept her off treats & wondered if it was the hot weather that was making her drink more & wee water. Her poo started to look a bit like mash rather than poo, so today we took her to the vet along with a poo sample in a bottle(theory was ?bacterial infection, as the poo had become a little less watery after 3 days yoghurt & bokashi with their wormer).

We are lucky to have several vets at our surgery who have some knowledge of chickens, but today we got one who was covering for our usual one who usually works at another branch.

Bingo!! He looked at Kilo and admired her, complimenting that she was a very nice chicken. Kilo meantime transformed into this very bold girl, who was eyeing all around the room & stretching up tall whilst muttering.

The vet examined her & felt she presented with a good weight and very healthy generally. He thought the poo sample didn't look too out of the norm, but that she might have a bacterial infection from the description of her very watery poo. She got a little fed up with all the handling & prodding & decided to protest by flying up, scattering feathers everywhere. She had made her point.

Can we just say here that the poo sample was taken off the newspaper in the poo tray so had dried a little! As he was holding her in front of him facing away across the table and stroking her (and obviously enjoying the experience!!) she suddenly decided to make a sound & then.. ejaculated a great squelch of very liquidy poo all over the table including down the front of his trousers :shock::vom::oops: . She then just stood there with her head on one side as if nothing had happened :lol: .

He was extremely gracious and responded "Well at least we know what we're dealing with now!":lol::lol:

She's on 5 days Baytril - not a problem as she's not laying.

The plan is that if she shows no improvement THEN they'll examine a sample. He felt there was no need at this point to pay out for a poo test. However, he asked if he could keep the poo sample (hadn't he had enough!!! ) as he was interested to test it out of personal interest. He also said he'd let us know if it showed up anything, even though we weren't paying for this!! 8)

What an excellent vet! And a good sport.

On a more serious note, he mentioned that there has been an increase in c.foetus this year so might consider that if she doesn't improve.

lol you've got to love em my Augsta did exactly the same thing to our vet today just before she was PTS. Thankfully he just laughed and had another cuddle with her. Chickens really have the most delightful habits  . Clearly Kilo has a good aim and an ability to make her point. I doubt he will ever hold her with her bum facing him again  Maybe she could make another living as a dive bomber......

Not sure she needed a particularly good aim. It was more of a "crop spray" wide angle job :lol::lol: . Guaranteed to hit any mark within a 90 degree arc :lol:
