Fur is going to buy me an all-emcompassing encyclopaedic chicken manual/book for Christmas. The problem is does this book exist and what is it called?

 

Any ideas, recommendations from you very wise & resourceful people?

I have a copy and it is thorough. However I find if I want to know anything about chickens I always go to the forum not my copy of this book (and this is speaking as someone whose response to anything I don't know much about is to buy a book and read it to find out more )

Thanks Patricia. You're absolutely right that the forum is an enormous resource.

 

I also love books (no !) and would like one that I can thumb through, look at breeds and various chicken related issues at my leisure. What is in your recommendation?

I forgot, I'd also be interested in health and breeds. In particular hybrid breeds as I don't seem to be able to find anything on these.

I think it is a good book but I use it less than I expected to. (BTW I see it is £5.99 on Amazon at the moment ) It has lots and lots of breeds listed. I would suggest it as part of your library.

 

I find books by Katie Thear hard work to read.

 

I bought Keeping Pet Chickens by Johannes when I started and it's a lovely little book for beginners. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone considering keeping chickens, but it's too simple if you've been keeping chickens for a while, (although diagrams of each part of the anatomy may still be useful).

 

I ordered 'The right way to keep Chickens' through The Book People and it should arrive today. I'll let you know what I think.

We've got this book and it's quite a handy guide. Lots of illustrations in the form of drawings. No photos though (gosh, I sound like a big kid )

Victoria Roberts book Diseases of Free range Poultry is very well thumbed on my shelf.... but then so is the chicken-porn that is David Scrivener's book 'Rare Chicken Breeds'

I've just gone on to the BP site, typed in "the right way to keep chickens" and in the list which the system flagged up is (amongst other unrelated things ) a set of Hannah Montana books ....well they do have "keep" in the blurb

 

I could well be going on & placing an order.......but not HM !!!!

Choosing and Keeping Chickens: Chris Graham is a fab book. Chris Graham is the editor of Practical Poultry so lots of good evidence for his statements too!

I got Hen Keeping by Mike Hatcher from the Book People (£2.99) yesterday. I've only flicked through it so far, but it 's well laid out and has really nice illustrations.

I was also tempted into buying Super-Cute Crochet (£4.99) even though I've never got the hang of crochet, being left handed! It's got the patterns to make a lovely family of eggs, hens and chicks called the Buff-Orpington's in it. They really are cute!

If I remember rightly, that one is great if you mainly want to look at pictures, but it's not all that informative. I'd check if I could, but I'm pretty sure it went FTGH to someone on here.
