4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Hiya,

 

Just been out to put my chickens to bed for the night and have noticed that each of them has an especially large and huge crop!

 

They have been in their run all day and have only had pellets to eat so I don't see why or how they could have over indulged...

 

The crops are soft, not hard, so I guess thay are not impacted.

 

Anyone got any ideas? Should I be concerned?

I'd wait till the morning to see if clears.....might just of had a binge

mine had a frog in run with them today. Got it out but they had other ideas that would have been a cropful.

If it feels like a water balloon, I agree, it could be sour crop . Is she off treats or looking miserable? If you suspect sour crop, let us know. I had that last week with Milly but managed to sort it within a day or two.

I've just had another look and feel... on the two Pepperpot's they are just a little smaller than a tennis ball and pretty soft; not too dissimilar from a water balloon. On the Amber Star it is smaller.

 

I'll have another look in the morning before I let them out...

 

I've read that if it is sour crop a couse of action to withhold solid food for 24hs; but to provide water with ASV and Live youghurt... is this what folk here recommend?

If its all of them then I wouldnt be concerned, it would be very unlikely for them all to have a problem on the same day

One of mine had a huge crop one day, she had eaten a mouse whole

 

If its OK tomorrow I wouldn't worried, if its still large then it could be sour crop.

They are much smaller this morning... CiCi's is still the size of a golf ball.

 

I've put much more grit and shell in their food and bought some probiotic yoghurt.

If CiCi's crop is still large in the morning, before she's had anything to eat, then it's possible her crop is impacted if it's hard (if it's soft and squishy it might be sour crop). Have a look at her again tomorrow morning.

Be careful if its sour crop because one of mine died a while back from it despite my attempts to help her.Try massaging the crop to help break up the mass inside and if you can seperate her from the rest with a nil by mouth for 24hours.
