2009 Omlet cube and run for sale

Following lots of feather plucking we bumper bitted seven of our girls a few weeks ago. The other two had broad beaks and we didn't have bumper bits big enough so we left them. Since then feathers have grown back very quickly and the girls are looking much better until . . .

 

yesterday i let the chooks out and Hermione has no tail feathers at all! She looks terrible not like a hen at all. On closer inspection she doesn't look pecked as there are new tail feathers in place ready to burst forth. Can i assume new growth has pushed the old tail feathers out or have i got a feather puller?

One of mine has lost her tail as part of her normal moult - could it be that?

Was going to suggest a moult as well as my Vorwerk has lost all of her tail feathers plus a few on each wing. She looks most odd.

Thanks for that. I think my question has been answered as today she has lovely new little tail feathers peeking out. Very sweet!

Oh bless her! Nutmeg currently has no tail feathers after being attacked, Maggie and Martha are also looking rather depleted in the tail region due to moulting and frankly our garden looks as if we've sat out there plucking the poor girls!

 

Guess I'll be out with a rake saturday then clearing up

Definitely sounds like she's moulting, most of mine are at the moment. The coops and garden are full of feathers! Most have done it gradually but poor Juliet has a completely bald chest that happened in a matter of days! She'll stop laying while she moults too. Egg production has dropped dramatically here

I have 11 layables....if I'm lucky I get 1-3 eggs a day as 4 Orpies are moulting, 3 are exbatts who arrived in January so are probably 2+ years old so very likely to be coming to the end of their laying time thankfully, Blossom is post-broody and my 3 original girls lay most days but not every day.............should I get some more POLs I wonder

 

I have 3 POL-ish Bitzas who probably won't start to lay until the spring, 4 12/13 week old Pekins who will do likewise and a Lt Sussex of the same age, who may or may not start laying before springtime too..and her 2 brothers who will make history if they decide to lay

 

Roll on the day I can fulfil some egg orders
