is it easy selling day old chicks and growers

Recommended Posts

I want to expand my flock soon and would like to hatch more chicks during the spring and summer either by incubator or broody hen but i would like to sell the chicks or growers, does anyone on here do this?

1. is it economically viable and worth the trouble?

2. Where is the best place to advertise them, bearing in mind that you may be placing the ad quite quickly after you see what hatches?

3. Have you sold them all or been left with too many for you to look after?

Its just in the planning stages at the moment but wanted to do some research first and i know what a great bunch of minds you lot have.

Thanks

You would be better off asking these questions on the River Cottage or Practical Poultry forums, as the selling of Livestock via this forum is prohibited, as are adverts by those who would wish to do so.

You can sell via the **Omlet Marketplace** although I don't believe I've ever noticed chicks for sale there.

**Preloved** often has chicks for sale.

I also think you'd struggle to sell un-sexed chicks. I know there are often people looking for a couple of day olds because they've had none or just one hatch, but the chances of you having your's at the right age at the right time would be pretty slim.

I'd think you'd struggle to find homes, as Jools said, you may sell some to others with failed hatches but on such a smal scale it may be hard to get a good reputation to sell through word of mouth.

You'd be able to find homes for POL hens easier I'd think, but you'd be left with cockerels - maybe consider dual purpose birds?

Try Practical Poultry, gumtree, the Omlet marketplace, preloved, local pet shops and feed stores.

I can't imagine it would be hugely profitable on a small scale. The cost of feed, bedding and extras would seriously outweigh the price you could ask for them, especially growers.

It's lovely to hatch for your own benefit or for someone who wants specific birds but commercially would be really tricky.

So far I've managed to sell two Brahma growers, two Aracauna growers, two Light Sussex growers, One Maran crossbreed and a Speckled Sussex grower, all were girls. I can't even give the boys away so they end up in the freezer. There is a market for some breeds and not others. I don't do it as a business, I enjoy hatching chicks and I can't keep them all so I've had to sell a few along the way. I have the space to grow the boys to a reasonable size but right now I have around ten of them eating me out of house and home  I can't bare to cull them before they crow so I have a garden full of dinners

The Omlet marketplace is brilliant for selling a few girls. I got an amazing price for the Brahmas! I doubt I will ever see any profit at all from selling any of my babies, I'm far too sentimental and we've kept far more than we've sold :lol:
