How much grit?

Recommended Posts

I do seem to be asking a lot of questions but...

How much grit do you need to feed chickens? I did intend to have a separate pot with grit so they could select how much for themselves, but because the Grub and Glug haven't arrived, I'm using that for their feed.

Should you mix grit in with the layer's pellets and if so, in what ratio? Is it better to put it in a feeder, or on the ground, as mine seem to love picking grit from the ground?

They picked all the small bits of grit out of the compost in their dirt tray. This morning I put a handful on the ground, scattered around the run, and they enjoyed scratching and picking this up, but that made me feel I wasn't giving them enough as it has all gone now.

Sorry for all the questions!

Thank you coco.

Will I be OK putting a handful on the ground for the next few days, do you think? I don't want to go and buy another feeder as the Grub and Glug should be arriving soon. I've found the water bowl is rapidly tipped up so I may have to buy a water feeder as it is in the interim.

Cheers!

Hi

Sometimes I throw a bit around the run(just a couple handfuls ) but lately I have just thown a handful in with the pellets in the feeder(my feeder hangs on an old dog lead as I dont use my grub & glug). Most of the grit sits at the bottom of the feeder. They dont polish it off, its just available really.

I have been throwing handfuls on the floor, but they always eat it straight away, so today I put some grit in an old flowerpot saucer. They simply scratched around and emptied it out, inverted the saucer and then stood looking a but puzzled on top of it! I guess they did want a bit more grit than I'd been giving them, but mostly I think it was just a new chicken game!

I think I'll have to give in and get another grit feeder when I visit Pets at Home (oops, I mean the chicken-spoiling shop) later today. I can't see the glug and grub arriving soon with the postal strike.
