jam
Hi My black brahma squishy's legs have recently become pink and dotted with little scabs, but only on the front and inbetween the toes. Is this the early symptoms of scaly leg? Ain't Nobody Here
Difficult to say without a photo - any chance of one? There are usually raised, crusty scales. This was my Molly's scaly leg a while back. Does it bear any resemblance to that?
jam
sorry i dont have a recent photo to post. Her legs dont look crusty at all and the skin between the feathers are still surprisingly smooth, besides the scabs (once youve managing to battle past the thick forest of feathers!) which is why ive come to ask if it is scaly leg, any ideas what it could be if its not and what i should do? Ain't Nobody Here
Does it look like bites? I'm wondering if you could treat the legs with surgical spirit in case there are any beasties. I've no experience of feathery legged girlies so hopefully someone else with some may have some ideas?
jam
The scabs are round and bite like so i think a biting beastie is the prime suspect, but what to do?...
Christian
You could dunk the legs in surgical spirit or try Johnsons mite spray on her legs? It zaps most beasties
Jools
If her legs are sore, then surgical spirit may be a bit too harsh for her. I use it if I spot the first signs of scaley leg, but my Marans cockerel has funny looking feet too! They look sore sometimes and he has profuse feathering too, so I apply Camrosa ointment weekly, covering his feet and legs completely. He complains bitterly at the indignity of it, but it does seem to help. I have to say that I don't know what the cause is, just that he seems quite happy with it and I know it's not scaley leg. It might be worth a try on your chicken.
Chook n Boo Mum
My Pekin Blossom came with scaly leg mite, bless her I dunked her sore little legs into a jar of surgical spirit.......she was extremely unimpressed with this so I assume they were quite sore .... then smeared vaseline all over her legs & feathers (which I had trimmed back to get a better chance of treating the beasties efficiently ).....I did this every3-4 days I think for 2 weeks then weekly for a couple more & her legs are looking so much better, even the nastiest scales have fallen off & the skin underneath is clear, no more nasty scabs thankfully Good luck with your girl's visitors ..and keep an eye on the other girls as they are quite easily passed on I think, fortunately Bloss was in quarantine anyway as she was my "chicken of fate" Sha x
Egluntyne
Johnson's Scaley lotion or Xeno 200 will deal with Scaley Leg mite. **Not licensed for use on poultry in UK. Egg withdrawal periods apply.
