Mrs AVP
Good morning Just wondered how chickens react to firework noises, is there anything in particular we need to do to help stop them being scared if people are having fireworks nearby? Many Thanks
Chook n Boo Mum
Put them to bed, close the door & leave them to it seems to be the general consensus.........mine got more concerned about me opening the door to check on them than the fireworks themselves.....I got a very old fashioned expression and disgruntled boks "we are NOT amused" Some may give their houses an extra layer of cover to muffle the sounds, but I think once the chooks are asleep they are fairly contented. Gelbel
So is my idea of brinigng them in, in a nioce snuggly box a bit OTT?
debbier
I was talking to my hubby about this last night. He pointed out that the chickens take absolutely no notice of either fireworks or a manic barking terrier so why on earth was I worrying about it. He thinks I've got the most laid back (or stupid? His words, honest!) chickens ever.
Chook n Boo Mum
So is my idea of brinigng them in, in a nioce snuggly box a bit OTT? I even considered bringing the eglu in last year (my first!)...their expressions set me right on that decision .....I'm glad...hoiking 19 of them in of an evening would be an interesting pastime Sha x
Gelbel
I think I will though - it can be like a war zone round here (though NYE is worse). Any excuse for a cuddle eh?
Chook n Boo Mum
I have to say if I lived in the middle of a "heavyduty" firework area I would probably have brought them in, but I don't so didn't..........play it by ear......stand next to the house & listen for a few minutes....... if they are distressed (flapping & making noises) move them, if not leave them....unless you are desperate for a cuddle of course Sha x
docsquid
There were a few loud bangs last night, but this year has been much quieter than normal for fireworks, I think because Diwali was earlier this year. Usually it is a bit like Beirut but this year very tame. Or maybe "Ooops, word censored!"ody has any money to buy them I think I will shut the Eglu door tonight (normally I leave it open), and just check that there are no worried Boks when the loud bangs go off. I think DH would go nuts if I let them in the house!

prof
i was wondering what to do too as i only got my chucks on 22nd oct 09 so i am pretty new to this. My friends bring them inside in a box, but im going to leave mine shut in outside. I think the panicing dog pacing about and my cats trying to get in the "new arrived box" may be more upsetting than leaving them outside. We get loads of fireworks here. Yesterday i mowed the lawn while they were out freeranging and they werent bothered at all by the noise. i thought they would run back to their but they carried on pecking about
BocBoc
My two remaining girls don't seem to be bothered either - they are more concerned when our security light comes on when we go to check on them
brambles
Hi Prof, I'm in Cheshire too - your set up looks gorgeous, what lovely cats! Mine are almost as fluffly! My girls were ok on Halloween when we had idiots with fire crackers going for ages - much longer than it'll be tonight. There was the odd blood spot in the eggs the next day - from the sudden surprise of noise, but they were fine. Bear in mind that there'll be fireworks for a few nights, particularly those rained off tonight. (Eddie Walley's at the Crockey Trail will be a total swamp tonight, I'm staying in front of my fire!). jomaxsmith
I've shut the Eglu door tonight for the first time since last winter but that's as much as I'm doing. We're fairly rural though so there's usually only one lot of fireworks that are very close Jo
Millihelen
But what about having fireworks in our own garden? Last year we said no as we had only had chickens a couple of months and weren't too sure. This year the boys (who really should have grown out of it!) are pleading again. OH says have them in the front garden, but I'm thinking the chickens put up with buses and noisy drunks at a weekend (their cube is just a few feet from a bus stop!!) - so if I shut the door on them, maybe they would be OK? Chook n Boo Mum
My seven are spending the night in the bath, as we're setting off fireworks in our garden later Can I suggest you don't use a flash ...............DD took a photo of Blossom as she was disappearing into the cube one bedtime, the flash went off & Clover fell off his perch on top of the nestbox "wall"....he was fine, we nearly wet ourselves laughing, but I can imagine the chooks reactions on a slippery bath would be....interesting to say the least.........maybe a video would be good.... Hen Watch
I just shut the eglu door, that's all. This will be their 3rd year of fireworks and they are still here to tell the tale. Do find I get torpedo shaped eggs sometimes when they've had a bit of a shock.....
Old Speckled Hen
Mine were OK last year and we had lots of noisy fireworks (against my better judgement .... bah humbug) What I did notice was that our roosting wild birds (we have a couple of camera nest boxes) disappeared after being tucked up for the night earlier. Heaven knows where they went and I should imagine all the adjacent hedgerows got a loud awakening too. We had some fireworks left over and hubby has been making some grunts about getting the grandchildren over but I have kept very quiet, the weather forecast is bad and there is a big display in town so ..... phew..................... might get away with it
