I have aquired some old icelandic style knitting patterns. They require a type of wool called Lopi, which appears to be no longer available. The needle size is 5.5mm and 6.5mm and the tension is 7 stitches to 5cm. Anyone have any ideas as to what weight (aran/ chunky etc)of wool would be a good alternative.............I used to knit this type of jumper a lot years ago but I can't remember what the wool was that I used!

Is there a tension guide on the pattern? If so, you need a yarn that equates to the same tension. Sounds thicker than DK, but not chunky. Probably about an arran weight.

My mum used to knit Lopis when I was younger......huge great things that no-one else wanted to knit for the shop we worked in.........48/50in chest jobbies ......and watch the tv whilst knitting too

i used to knit these all the time, on circular needles in front of the telly. I gave them as presents to everyone I knew..... haven't seen them around for a while! I think I even have some lopi wool in the cupboard, I'll have a look and report back.

Sounds like it's either aran or chunky. What's the tension like?

I popped into my local wool shop and spoke to the lovely lady ( who is about 150 years old) and she remembered Lopi wool - apparently chunky wool will do the job. Problem solved, thanks for all your help.
