Chicken bald back

I will be taking Gertie to the vets a.s.p as she is not drinking, eating or pooing. She is also just squatting down and very sleepy. Her crop is empty too.

 

In the mean time I have isolated her in a nice cosy box in the shed and have tried to give her water from a syringe. Getting the tip of the syringe between the top and bottom parts of the beak is so difficult. She just flicks her head and the few drops of water are wasted.

 

Has anyone got a tried and tested technique for giving water to a poorly chicken?

It's easier with two people if you can do that.

 

One of us holds the chicken ( wings held tight shut against your body, then the other hand folding the head gently back) then second person works the syringe gently through the beak. Squirt gently in bursts so they have a chance to swallow. Or try wrapping them in a towel.

 

A long thin syringe is best I find.

And be very careful. If you can get a drop or two into her beak and let her swallow, it's much safer than squirting it down her throat .... you don't want to drown her. Hope she picks up.

and I find fatter ones better as less distance for plunger to travel.

Be careful as it is easy for fluid to be inhaled. You may be better going gently into the side of the beak towards the back rather than the front.

I have just been to check on Gertie and I'm sorry to tell you she has died. She was still warm so her passing must have only a few minutes ago. It's so sad but at least she didn't suffer for long.
