I thought they were the same thing but didn't want to hijack the other threads.

 

I have bought ex batt crumbs. Will my new ex batts, when I get them, be able to eat crumb or should I order layers mash? If so, can you give me the make so I can order it.

I'd imagine your existing ex-bats will thrive on the ex-bat crumb. You'll be feeding them at a higher nutritional level so I doubt it will harm them.

 

They're bred as high producing egg layers which takes its toll on their systems, so the better the nutrition, the better it is for them.

They'll be fine with that; it's near enough to mash in texture to not bother them too much. Giving them that with the odd treat of meal worms to get their protein levels back up will be the best for them.

If they don't recognise it as food to start with try whizzing it in a blender quicckly, don;t make it total dust as mash isn't, then mix it with crumb, they'll soon cotton on, some seem to be savvier than others!

My batties had the crumb from the first day I got them. There was no problem with them recognising it as food - they absolutely adore it and wolf it down as soon as I top up their feeders. I feed it alone with no others supplements at all and they're doing fab on it. Shame the same can't be said for the veggies I keep trying to tempt them with, they are always eyed with great suspicion!

 

Oh and they LOVE mealworms too!

They're better off eating their ex-bat crumb or layers mash/pellets than too many treats so don't worry about trying to get them to eat up their 5 a day.

tried cooking them?

mine would NOT eat raw asparagus stalks, nor cooked whole, them I whizzed them and mixed with some wet mash and they went balistc for it, now look at plain wet mash, cos there nothing yummy in it, in disgust

took mine like forever to discover other foods!

You give your hens asparagus stalks Missus? I use them for a delicious soup.

 

My newest ex-batts have enjoyed their ex-batt crumbs. I don't think they were overly bothered about the slight difference in texture to their usual mash.

 

They are now being weaned onto pellets, and seem to like them well enough too.

I hadn't thought of cooking them up, what a good idea. I will give it a go and see if they receive the veg offerings with any greater enthusiasm.
