Exercise thread anyone ????????????

Recommended Posts

Since September I have lost 15lb [snip] I find it really hard to keep going when progress seems so slow but I WILL keep trying.

It may seem slow progress, but when put like that it's remarkable; well done you!

I've been plodding along pretending to run since about April. I do find that if I keep it up and do 30-40 mins 3 times a week I lose weight, tone up and feel better without having to eat less. However, I can't run for more than about 2-3 mins at a time, so spend a lot of time walking and feeling stupid. Yesterday I made a breakthrough; I tried running really really slowly, and 5 minutes went past before I had to stop. Maybe I've just been over-pacing myself?

5 years ago when I spent 6 days treking on the great wall for Cancer Research UK we had a doctor with us - obviously we were walking/climbing, not running but her view was if you are out of breath and cannot hold a conversation you are going too fast. At some points it felt as though we were walking in slow motion, but you do sustain the activity for longer that way.

In the fitness trade thats called the 'Talk Test'- its why Aerobics teachers try to get you to speak back to them during a class (at least the good ones do- dont get me started!) to be exercising at an optimum level, you should be able to talk but not sing. If you cant talk you are going into your anaerobic threshold and will not be burning fat or training your heart, if you can sing you are not working in your trining zone.

Excellent heads up top tip TAJ!!

We sing during bits of the class I do (Body Combat). It's not particularly tuneful, mind :P

I know if I'm working past my limit when I start to feel sick or dizzy. Not good. I normally know my limits well, but a few months back, I gave blood the day before, and the sick feeling came on really quickly. Bit silly of me really, as I should have realised that it might affect me like that.

And then you get the eejits who natter to their mates all way through the class  I used to turn the music up, split them up and work them harder!

I've just agreed to go to a Bollywood dance class to check it out - I do normal aerobics, dance aerobics and step, but never done that! It should be huge fun, if a bit embarrassing as I get it all wrong :)

My Sisters MIL has tried to teach me all sorts of Mauritian and Indian dances... Many times... She has now given up!!:lol:

I have tried! I just have no sense of rhythm !! Great fun though!

I have just bought as cheap calendar to mark on the weekly suggested mileage for marathon training. Working it back I have to start proper training on 1st January for the marathon on 18th April. I am really worried as am not a long distance runner at all. My 'Non runners marathon' book hopefully will talk me thought it.
