sparkysmum
I've been feeling pretty slovenly recently - too dark & wet to run & no time for the gym. So I've hired a rowing machine, £35 for 8 wks. Was thinking an exercise thread might be a good motivator, we could challenge ourselves do do something. Here is my challenge for me use rowing machine alternate days and short runs in between (if dark & wet). Longer run if dry.
Snowy
Good idea! I'm afraid my exercise is limited to a good walk most days. I aim for at least an hours brisk walk across the fields with the dog. I can only do a few days though then have to let OH do a couple of days as my knees really start to ache Today is my day again though! See you later! Seagazer
I'm very that I haven't done any for ages yet spend the whole time moaning about my jelly belly and my thighs. So perhaps its a good idea and will shame me into getting on and doing it.
jlo
Hoping to go to the gym later. I will also try and play tennis with DD later if the weather improves.
debbier
I actually look forward to my exercise classes. (Well, most of them!) I do two combat classes, which is like martial arts/boxing to music . It' 's not a contact thing, but is a brilliant stress reliever. One dance class, which is quite hilarious, and you do need to shake off inhibitions to get the most out of it. I recently started a spin class, as I wanted to do 4 a week, and this filled a gap. This is my least favourite, but I'm starting to like it more now my bum has got over the initial shock! I much prefer studio classes to solitary gym work, which I find boring and a complete chore, and I'd never stick to a regime like that. C&T
I went to the Gym last night, and for the first time used the running maching. Is it me, or is the machine much harder than running out of doors? I can average around 9 km/hr outside, but struggled at 7 on the machine. Only managed 5 km instead of the 8/10 I had planned, as couldn't keep going any more! Was very hard work! Oh, and still trying to work out why my watch said I had burnt one number of calories, but the machine said exactly half that amount, when both were working off the same heart rate monitor... I am choosing to believe my watch! But I will do that half marathon next year... Maybe!
docsquid
I'm a qualified fitness instructor and before I broke my leg earlier this year was teaching two step and one spin class a week, plus 2 or 3 nordic walking classes. Also taught salsacise, legs bums and tums etc. Kept fit during the summer with teaching nordic walking (this is like cross country skiing), plus a large amount of conservation work. Just had the go-ahead to start doing some aerobics again if I want to, but I really don't like the classes on offer here - all Body Step which I think contains some very dangerous moves (I used to teach it but stopped because of this). Also getting over a bad cold and still on antibiotics for my chest. Once I'm off the antibiotics and feeling better, I'll probably do my own thing at home for a while. There is still the conservation work to be done - coppicing, tree planting, felling and thinning, stacking wood, re-roofing sheds, fencing, cleaning out nest boxes, putting up greenhouses etc etc so I shan't be short of exercise! Fairly much the same here, but I have backache instead of the knees Garden and house keep me fairly mobile too, but gone are the days of the gym and dancercise! (mm, guess that dates me a bit. Anyone remember Pinapple Dancercise classes???) We do have a recumbant exercise bike which we use when we have a mad moment and also it really does help with backache. However, I only ever use the easiest program.
The Dogmother
I was a fitness instrcutor many moons ago, but am limited with time available now. I do circuit training once a week - very heavy class, one other gym session a week (mix of weights and cardio) with Rosie. I run about once a week and walk everywhere as wel as exercising the dog. It's not really enough and I ought to get back into running again. Great idea to start a thread
Olly
Can't tell you how long it is since I've been to the gym, yes I am still paying membership - gyms in the city with a swimming-pool are few and far between, and of course if I stopped the payments I would have to pay another joining fee ... this conveniently ignores the fact that it would have been cheaper by now to rejoin than keep on paying and not using it ... I only really enjoy swimming, and I am struggling so much to get up in the mornings, I just can't do it. I used to swim 3-4 times a week before work. On the bright side, once I start sawing wood for the woodburner again, I should lose weight - it worked wonders last year! I don't really like exercise classes and I'd struggle to fit them in because I'm out at least two nights a week, if not more. I'm impressed with how much some of you do. chickencam
We are also members of a local health club with a pool, we love swimming, and we play the odd game of badminton too, but it is ages since we went what with various illnesses and family commitments. At least at ours if you cancel membership you can rejoin without paying another joining fee.
sparkysmum
Well I walked the dogs for their usual hour and a bit and squeezed in a quick rowing machine session before work. Am really impressed with what everyone else does routinely. Hope everyone else kept active today. Keep it up Allison
Seagazer
I've had a day walking round London with OH and YS - will that count? We walked to and from the station too. Trouble is I had a Prets Xmas sandwich, cappucino and packet of crisps

Trouble is I had a Prets Xmas sandwich, cappucino and packet of crisps Of course it counts! And I bet you walked off that sandwich & crisps too! OH & I are trying to eat well and we are going to buy a Wii & Wii fit board and so some more exercise at home while having a laugh of course! Lesley
I've been doing more exercise recently - it will be 7 years in December since I badly injured my knee and it's been a long haul to get where I am now, albeit almost 4 stone heavier , I used to do 2 aerobics classes and 1 pilates class a week as well as swimming 3 mornings a week.............. I started at the gym 2 years ago and Aquafit 18 months ago and last week I went to a Body Vive class - I thought I was going to die after the first one but this week was a lot better - I even managed the floor work this week by taking a memory foam cushion to help me kneel down and a pile of Steps to help me back up - I'm past caring what it looks like I've cleared out the dumping ground that was supposed to be my home gym and I can now get to all the evil machines again My Wii Fit has just been delivered - we're in for a fun weekend I quite like the gym once I manage to get there......but mostly I can't be bothered to get there Unfortunately, I've just had a high cholesterol test.....even after all that!!! - but, I'll still keep going. Janty
I've been a slug lately. However, I have just bought a pedometer and I'm challenging myself to do 12,000 steps a day. I am also trying to stick to slimming world. I am not going to classes but I am putting the money I'd otherwise spend on classes into a hen shaped money box and once I've lost a set amount of weight, I'm spending the money on Pandora yummy stuff...that's my incentive. Chucky Mama
Well I am at an all time heavy I have rather stupidly signed up to do the Brighton Marathon in April. I ran 7 miles last Saturday which is the furthest I have ever run and did 3 1/2 miles today. I really need to crack on with training but...there is always a reason not to
sparkysmum
Chucky Mama was that the Brighton Marathon all 26 miles of it? I'm well impressed. Hope the training is going well. Long runs on Sundays? Keep it up. ANH are you there? Are you still up for the Edinburgh Half?
Ain't Nobody Here
I've been hiding . Haven't run for weeks . Can't see me doing the half marathon unless springtime gets me going again . I'm still doing my step class on a Thursday but that's it at the moment .

Seagazer
Thank you we did. YS had teacher training day so we thought we'd do something nice. OH and YS decided we should do The London Dungeon - I'm a complete scaredy cat and very nearly walked out in the entrance way but enjoyed it in the end, then a trip round Hamleys - that must have walked off quite a bit and it was very hot in there

Long runs on Sundays? Keep it up. I don't know what I was thinking I put my application in online really slowly in the hope that it would sell out but it didn't. I took it as a sign My 3 children all competed in the Swindon School Cross Country championships this morning and the 2 youngest qualified for the next round. ES was thrilled as he DIDN'T qualify. He was bribed into running by myself and PE staff to get the school extra points. I was very proud of them especially ES. Quote of the morning was ME "Guys, I am so proud of you running for your school" DD "What, I wasn't running for school.." I wait for a profound end to the sentence but what came was " I was running for chocolate, what about you 2?"
