jam
As some of you may have read one of hens attempted to crow a few months ago and i was starting to think that maybe she could be a cockerel. Since then she made no more noises so the matter was forgotten, until a few days ago... I was very surprised to hear one morning earlier this week a very loud crow from my garden. I instantly suspected squishy. I hoped it was my imagination as 'it' didnt crow for the rest of the week, but this morning she did, about 5 times in a row! Squishy has also since the beginning of the week turned into a bit of a bully and is occasionally grabbing hold of a bunch of feathers of both my ex batts (who both share the position of 'the big cheese' in the coop) and refusing to let go! I found this very surprising because squishy used to be the most scaredy chicken of the lot! Could this be because she/he is trying to become head honcho after descovering his/her true sexuality?! Chicken Shirl
Goodness, he has been keeping a low profile. He may be trying to mount your hens if he is getting hold of neck feathers and holding on. Are the hens crouching for him Is he bringing them to the food and making encouraging sounds when he finds something good to eat He should have been doing all things cockerely well before now. Will you be able to keep him

Chook n Boo Mum
Is s/he wearing male plumage? Thing is though, we can be very blind to what we don't want to admit even if full male plumage is on show.......says she from recent personal experience Sha x

Will you be able to keep him He's been doing the complete opposite actually! just this morning when i went to let them out and feed them, he and winnie, one of the ex batts, was standing by the food and their feathers round their necks were fanned around their heads and they were jumping towards each other claws first! I really hope ill be able to keep him, he's the family favourite. I'm going to see my neighbours today about it. I think itll be ok for now because he's only ever crowed in the morning at about 8 oclock, but it all depends how early hell crow in the summer! Chicken Shirl
Have you got any photos of him we could look at He may just be establishing himself as head honcho at the moment. 8am is quite late for him to crow in the morning. Mine starts about 4.30 and again at about 6am and so on through the day.
