Oh I am so pleased. As you know my sister got foxed & I am incubating eggs. Well her 3 silkie eggs were all clear / not fertile upon candling tonight. But my 3 frizzle pekin eggs I put in for her are all fertile! Way to go Button (again). She must be a right little madame at the moment wanting all these children. At least I have something for my sister. Ahhhhhh.

Eggs stopped turning last night. Middle egg has wobbled that much it's turned itself all squiffy. All of them are wobbling like mad - it's very exciting. Will have to get the other brooder all set up today. My front room (hatchery) will look even more like The Red Light District!

I had a couple of chicks under a lamp once and was walking back home with the dogs one evening and noticed that rather conspicuous red glow from the spare room. I thought exactly the same thing!

 

Have you tried an electric hen? I got a little one (12in x 12in) this year and was very impressed with it. One of my broodies had abandoned one of her chicks, so I stole another one from her and raised them under it in the house.

Electric hens are good, I've bought a reptile mat to create my own electric hen, I hate the red glow from the heat lamp and if you look at the chicks too long you get a headache

We had a couple of electric hens at the farm but they lived on top of one of the massive hutch unit things

I think it was more so that the children could see the chicks when they were under a lamp, more than anything

 

Let us know how you get on with the heat mat Tasha, I'd never thought of having one raised like an electric hen, just thought having it on the floor would be a bad idea for some reason

Will do Lewis, I plan to attach it to some board and raise that up on legs then put some fabric strips hanging down so they can push through to the warm

Egg number 1 has pipped! But I'm keeping a watchful eye on it as I think it's pipped the wrong end. Will assess progress over the next few hours or so.

It's making progress. The pip hole is getting bigger, it's a proper diamond shape now with a lot of fine cracks around it. The other eggs are jerking & wobbling like mad now.

Brooder number 2 is all set up & waiting. I've also just counted 3 spare bulbs in stock.

Anyone would think I was breeding hundreds!

 

I reckon we will hear loud cheep cheeps & flapping in the night!

 

A lady who had 4 eggs off me has had all 4 hatch 2 days ago. What the funny thing is, is Button has since gone off lay for the Winter. Probably thinks she's got enough children for this year.

Egg number one must have had a good go at its egg in the night - a right good crack has appeared now. It needs a right good shove now to flip off the top & ooze itself out. (excuse the technical descriptions).

Egg number 1 is all hatched & fluffing up in the incubator! It's taken nearly 24 hours from pipping yesterday. It got out all by itself, no help thank goodness! It's very cute & looks to be like a honey / ginger colour. Will report in later when it's properly fluffed up.

Hope the others at least pip later tonight.

I bet I can guess what your request will be yes, but you will all have to be patient until it's fluffed up. I love pekin chicks fluffy little feet. So cute.

As we are just sort of foster carers for these chicks, we wondered what to name them? They really are for my sister.

 

Update!! My sister has named it Gino.
