Help my band get a home..

Recommended Posts

I have mentioned a few times I used to play in a youth band - the Romford Drum & Trumpet Corps. This is a great organisation who do loads for the youth in Romford, keeping kids off the streets, providing entertainment, lots of charity work etc. In their 52 years literaly thousands of kids have been through the band. They charge no "subs" or other fees even though instruments and uniforms are provided which are hugely expensive. They take the kids on subsidised holidays every year and all of this is done through the hardwork that the parents and supporters do for fundraising.

The one thing the band has never had is their own premises - somewhere to practice and keep excess uniforms and equipment. A place to call home. Now they have been offered the chance to take on a somewhat dilapidated building and refurbish it for their own use and that of the local community. To help with this they have applied for £50,000 of lottery funding.

They have been put forward TODAY to be voted for to win this money as part of "The Peoples Millions" show on ITV. They will be on "London Tonight" pleading their case. They are up against another group from Hackney for the chance to win this money.

The winner will be the group which gets the most telephone votes by midnight tonight. Calls cost 10p each from a landline and each line can place 10 votes. We have spent today frantically trying to gather as many votes as possible, every vote counts. If you can spare 10p or more to vote for the band we would be grateful! Our voting number is 0871 626 8846.

The bands own website is here- you can even listen to a snippet of music on it. (I am the webmaster!)

Thanks all!

A huge thanks to everyone who voted

WE WON!

It was very exciting, I couldn't go down in person but they announced the winner live on the telly last night - the kids were made up!

After 52 years the band can finally have their own HQ, our founder and bandmaster never thought he would live to see this day but he has!
