This was the actual message which is total rubbish!

Does anyone know how this has happened and if I can do anything about it? Does it mean I have a opened a dodgy e-mail - I don't remember opening anything dodgy.

My husband's Hotmail account did this twice last year and I know of others who have had similar experiences. It was suggested that it was a virus and unfortunately some of the people who he'd emailed then started having similar problems. Not how to make friends and influence people! Don't know how to fix the problem or avoid it but you may find that quite a number of people realise that this is a span problem and ignore it.

Your account has almost certainly been hacked. You can't do nothing otherwise it will be used repeatedly and Hotmail will suspend it. You need to change your password pronto, and use a secure one that has a mixture of letters and numbers and is a non-obvious one.

make sure its something with a - or ~ or @ in it, it seems like once they are in, they keep trying and pass on. with a symbol, the computers dont seem to be able to access as easily

A popular variation on this scam is an email purporting to come from you to all your address book contacts saying that you are on holiday somewhere, a fate has befallen you, and can they send you some money by Western Union quick!

 

Looks very plausible and unfortunately some people do fall for it.

 

You need to contact your service provider too.

Also run a virus scan on your pooter in case you have a trojan on board.

 

Do you access your Hotmail account vis the internet or Outlook?

 

It's more likely to be hacked though.

password has been changed (gonna have trouble remembering it )

*errmmm* beg to differ Fred, but I have it set up like that on one of my machines. Not the safest way and Hotmail security is probably better than what is on that machine, but it's the only way to access it on that lappy.

I get tons more spam to my Google Mail account than my hotmail yet it's the hotmail addy that I tend to use everywhere - I never fill in a single thing with the gmail addy.

I have a hotmail address that I use for poultry forums instead of my business one. I can receive email via outlook express, but it won't send. It's the same for yahoo too - for me anyway.

You can BLOCK people with gmail. Only one spam message per person or address!

I'd need to be bothered! I get milions of them all from different addresses and mostly in Chinese!

 

I just use that account for one mailing list that I run so that people on that don't all get my hotmail account. Oddly there are a couple of my ex's on there that I'd rather NOT give out my personal addy too.
